ok, this is obviously the wrong forum, but i decided to post here because people will actually see my post. lately i've been doing all of my GoldenEye hacking on a Windows98 machine. i absolutely hate this computer because for one thing, it crashes CONSTANTLY. another thing i hate is the fact that i have so many problems with the GoldenEye Setup Editor. first of all, i get no font's in the visual editor. secondly, it won't let me use the image compression tools. but above all, the thing that i hate most is the fact that the visual editor crashes and freezes constantly. it crahses every single time i try to insert clipping tiles, etc. bottom line is, i absolutely hate using Windows98 for GoldenEye hacking.

i have a WindowsXP machine which doesn't start. the computer itself will start, but when it does, it says that Windows is failing to load, and that a recent software or hardware change might have caused this. it gives me 5 options:

Safe Mode
Safe Mode with Networking
Safe Mode with Command Prompt
Last Known Good Configuration that worked
Start Windows Normally

i have tried all of these and the OS still did not start. i even tried every additional option that is in the Windows advanced options menu, including the following option:

Disable automatic restart on system failure

which is supposed to obtain the error. the error reads (or atleast i think this was the error):

UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME

even this did not boot up the OS. i do not have a WindowsXP system CD or anything to repair the OS. so my question is, is there any possible way i can fix my computer, or am i completely screwed and have to buy the system CD to repair? i could prob borrow the CD from a friend, but i would still like to know if there's alternative.

Did you try doing chkdsk -r? I've had this issue before.

is chkdsk -r a command? if so then where and how do i enter it? can i have a total walkthrough please?

You would need to boot into DOS safe mode (or use a dos boot disk or something like that). Then you type chkdsk /r or chkdks -r, I forget which. It should do the scandisk utility and hopefully fix all the issues.

um, i do not have a dos boot disk and the damn thing won't let me use safe mode. every single time i try to use safe mode, a list of system components appears, then the entire thing simply restarts again. is there a keyboard shortcut to get into safe mode, or enter the command? i think i'm doing this all wrong. can you please give a completely thorough walkthrough on how to do this? i need a walkthrough that extends from turning on the computer, to using the scandisk utility. i need a COMPLETE WALKTHROUGH.

1: Go to bootdisk.com

2: Download a good bootdisk file with that chkdsk thingy.

3: Stick a blank floppy in and run the file.

4: Put the floppy in the bad computer, and boot the floppy.

5: After the floppy boots, run that chkdsk thingy. (I'm not sure what it'll do.)

6: Post the result here.

1. get a windows xp install cd
2. install xp over your old one (if done correctly it will keep your registry)
