it would have been awesome, and I would have taken it over perfect dark anyday...just imagine what rare could have done with the bond franchise that they didn't even touch basis on...anyway

I agree. I would have definitely preferred another Bond game from Rare over Perfect Dark any day of the week. It really was a shame that they gave up the license. It's an ever bigger shame that nobody else has even come close to the quality of GoldenEye.

I'm not so sure. Being developed by Rare isn't some magic bullet, remember a good chunk of the GE team left mid-PD development. I've also read (no idea where anymore) that they took a lot of flak from MGM for how un-Bond-like GE's gameplay was. I have a feeling we may have gotten one extra good Bond game, and maybe not even that if it wasn't what the team really wanted to be doing.

I see what you're saying, DB. But I think the ultimate reason why GE is still better than PD (well, in my opinion, anyway), was the level design. Had Perfect Dark featured better maps, it probably would've been more exciting. The basic gameplay elements were identical, after all. If you took PD and transplanted characters and stages based upon people and environments from Tomorrow Never Dies, and even just stuck in all of the weapons from GoldenEye, the game would probably be more fun. Not just because it is set in the Bond universe, but because it is mimicking real-world, modern day locations.

I wounder what the origonal GE/PD team were doing with PD? I read somewhere that after the split the remaining team took PD in a new direction. They did good but what would the origonal have been like?

I'm not sure what the source of the information was, but Sub's old beta site mentioned the original storyline involved time travel to the beginning of human civilization. It's pretty interesting that the four guys who left to form Free Radical ended up doing a time travel-themed game, albeit one that was stylistically nothing like GE/PD.

Yeah, I definitely agree about the level design, it's something nothing else has gotten right. Perfect mix of being designed for gameplay and being designed realistically. Compare it to modern games where realistic means having a load of rooms you can see but can't enter, fake doors, expansive outside areas with ridiculously artificial barriers...GE never really fell into that trap, one or two exceptions, and we know the backstory behind those.

The thing is, you can only do GoldenEye so many times. TimeSplitters 2 was blasted for keeping most of its gameplay intact and not modernizing. Would they have even kept the engine after a transition to the GCN/Xbox, or went the EA route and licensed an engine? It's clear that many of the game's innovations were ignored by its competitors, and even successors (see my comments about guard behavior in the TS thread). I've never played it, but from the videos I've watched it's clear that none of the GE/PD engine's quirks are in PD:Zero, so I think that answers that question. Like I said, we probably would've gotten one good Bond game in place of PD, and then ended up with the same mediocrity that Eurocom turned out.

Yeah, I don't doubt that the quality of each game would start to diminish over time. They also might suffer from the "too much of the same" disease, unless they let it evolve. PD did have quite a bit over GE, but since Rare didn't put out another FPS for a long time (and with barely any of the original crew), we never got to see where they'd take it from there.

The game's been out for 10+ years. I had it for PS1. Quite fun.

How's about we read the thread next time? Or just the first two posts, for that matter...

I did, but he didn't say if it was out yet. He just said he'd like to have it over Perfect Dark.

He did say "would have" and "could have" a few times, which should make the average person think that it was never released (not by Rare, the company mentioned), especially when most of it was all hypothetical. But, of course, you aren't the average person, are you?

Well kevin1gamer what I think wreck is ">implying"
here is that you are..not very bright.

Anyone with a brain would know that Tomorrow Never Dies has been about for 10 + years to quote Spyster.

It came out in 1997 around the same time GoldenEye 007 came out on the Nintendo 64. The Tomorrow Never Dies came for the Playstation 1 followed sometime in 1999 long after Rareware(or now known as Rare Ltd.) had given up their Bond rights(actually I think it was in 1998 when they did.. not too sure.);

So; you are asking if it is out yet. Well Kevin; is it 1999 or 2010?
