I missed this when it was posted. Very recommendable if you love de Zelda series!
Videos are long but go into big detail, speaking of the good and bad things of every game. Of course, lots of spoilers. I think he focuses too much on some bad things and I don't agree with some of them, but his analysis are very complete. He also has a good sense of humor.
His last video is an analysis of how the franchise has evolved from Ocarina of Time to Skyward Sword, and he ends with a wish list of things he wants for the next Zelda. A very good opinion although, again, we disagree in some points. So I'm going to make my own wish list.
-------------------------------
-All good additions from each game have to be in the next one!
How many times have you missed something a previous Zelda had that has been removed in the next iteration of the series? Like cutting the grass while running or the new sword techniques (from Twilight Princess) in Skyward Sword. Or an item like the Deku Leaf from Windwaker. Or more interaction with NPCs like in Majora's Mask and Windwaker. Or something like the moon cycles and it's events from Windwaker. Or the day/light transition in Skyward Sword...
-A more compact overworld. Like in the 2D Zeldas.
Hyrule and Termina Fields were good on N64, but as the technology progresses big empty spaces aren't justified and the Zelda series have failed in this (in water, land and air).
-True dungeons like in the N64 games.
If we were to make a list of the best dungeons of the 3D games, I'm pretty sure the top 5 or even top 10 will be 100% filled with Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask dungeons. Perhaps I would add a couple from Twilight Princess and one from Skyward Sword, but after the top 5.
As the series progressed dungeons have been simplified from complex structures that changed while completing them, to a meaningless room-to-room succesion. Carrying keys isn't necessary anymore since you won't find two closed doors at the same time anymore.
-Epic final bosses
One thing that hasn't repeated from Ocarina of Time is the fact that we knew about the bosses in the dungeons beforehand. The bosses should have their own story (and ancient monster sealed in the past, a curse, a monster that terrorizes a town, a fallen hero...) and be a challenge. They need to have puzzle and hability mixed mechaniscs, like the golden Budda boss in Skyward Sword. Defeating a boss should be something to be proud, like in old videogames.
-Motion controls FTW!
I love the Skyward Sword controls except for some things, they should use them as base and improve them. It doesn't need to be 1:1 exactly, specially when it comes to speed -> Link shouldn't swing his sword that easily and fast, it's ridiculous. Also, diving and swiming should be done with the analog stick. Don't abuse sensors!
The stamina bar and the way it's used is a good adition and it should remain. The only thing that Skyward Sword combat lacks are the improvements from Twilight Princess.
-Don't put thing in just for the sake of it.
What's the point of an instrument in Skyward Sword, or even in Twilight Princess? Just because the ocarina was popular and the wand in Windwaker worked ok (even if it wasn't as good as the ocarina) doesn't mean every Zelda game has to have an instument, specially if it's as atrocious as in Skyward Sword. Or a companion if it's going to ruin the game.
-Zelda shouldn't be addapted for all audiences but the players should addapt to Zelda.
Zelda isn't Mario, it has deeper and more dedicated gameplay. What's the point of exploring or solving a puzzle if a cinematic or a companion points out the solution? Zelda is about discovery, about dangers, about challenge, about epicness... it's an adventure the player lives! It doesn't need tutorials or long and spectacular cinematics, or an "elaborated" story. Ocarina of Time probably has the best story of the series and one of the best narratives of all videogames and it's always underrated in that aspect.
Perhaps a new player shouldn't play any Zelda as one of his/her first games. It's best to start with something simplier and gain experience game after game until you are prepared. Nintendo said that their strategy was something like this -> start with Wii Sports, Mario Party or Kirby, then play Mario Kart, Super Mario Galaxy, Pokemon or Smash BROS, then buy Zelda, F-Zero, StarFox, Metroid, Fire Emblem, Xenoblade... too bad they decided to transform their games in something superficial that anybody could play and experienced players doesn't fully enjoy.
And with that my rant ends |
