If it needs formatting then it is corrupted. It was probably mishandled before given to you.
The same concept applies to flash drives or flash memory in general, and there is no real work around. It's asking you to format for a reason - because it can't read the files on the disk anymore. _________________

I don't know what OS my friend is using on his PC though. |
If he was using it on his Wii, it was probably to load pirated games from the external hard drive, which is what I do. To do this they had to format the drive and make it so that only the Wii can "read" it, which explains why your pc can't read it and says that it needs to be formatted, if you do format it it will clear out all his games on it.
That is IF he was using it for that purpose, you should check with him first. |

Sounds corrupted from mishandling the actual drive. _________________ Also known as Spyster or Nyxem

And not other PCs?
Because my own External Harddrive works on my PC and my Wii.
Can't I use the other HDD at all? |
Do you use your HDD to play wii games form it?(from your wii itself)
Because like I said: For it to be used on the Wii for THAT purpose the HDD would have to be in a different format that is not readable by PC's.
And to asnwer your question: Yes , you can still use it, you'd just have to format it. But make sure that your friend doesn't have any games on it.
Also: You sure it's Wii and not WiiU? Because if it's the WiiU then it won't work on another system unless formatted as well. |

I use my own HDD for Wii and I boot the games from it.
I can also use my own HDD on my PC, I can also access other files on it.
Strangely, not for his HDD. I needed some games from his HDD, but my PC and even Linux VMs can't read his HDD for some reason.
He also use it for his Wii, assuming it is NTFS?
I see my friend monday at work and tell it doesn't work on my PC, I will ask if it works on his PC.
It's a normal Wii, not Wii U.
I have a white Wii, he has a black Wii.
I didn't try to connect his HDD to my Wii - I actually don't want to do that because I ever used WiiXplorer but that corrupted my HDD for some reason, so that's why. _________________ My stream channel: http://www.twitch.tv/speedruntrainer

It seems that the HDD is formated in WBFS, an exclusive format for Wii.
Originally there was only this option to run games from an USB HDD, but later they discovered how to do it in FAT32 and NTFS.
Google for WBFS Manager and try loading the HDD from it. I think version doesn't matter if it's 3.0 at least, which is the one I use.
WBFS is supposed to be faster than FAT32 and specially NTFS on the Wii. WBFS automatically shrunk isos to the actual game size (Twilight Princes was 1.X GB instead of 4.5 GB from iso), but you need to do a partition just for it (if you run out of space then you'll have to delete and split again. Or if you make it to big you'll waste some space)
Now FAT32 and NTFS can run shrunken games as WBFS if they are converted, I think. But you'll have to split the file if it's bigger than 4GB in FAT32 (Smash Brawl, Metroid Prime Trilogy and a few more). In NTFS there's no need to split files due to size, but it's the most unstable format for Wii.
You can plug the HDD in your Wii and try any loader without worries. WiiXplorer corrupts HDDs because it reads and writes on them, but loaders only read. |
