Wreck I was thinking we could start a HISTORY thread on the people that made modding GE possible. From gameshark to the EDITOR until now.
A memorandum of sorts to educate the community on how a small group of fans discovered memory addresses and level emptier codes to play Solo levels in multiplayer. Who made the discoveries and what drove everyone to quote "crack the code".
I will say I came a little late in the game but I was honored to help hash out a few levels with objects that needed them really badly. Jungle looked pretty crazy with like twelve really BIG trees but back then that's all we could do with a shark. _________________ |

This would be very interesting. Sadly, the potential readership would be too small for a book, even a self-published book printed by someone like http://www.lulu.com/, I'd imagine. A pity, as I'd love such a book (and if you do want to publish a book, then I'd certainly buy it), but a comprehensive article (or better, articles) would be fascinating to read. I know that Wreck has said that when Goldenye X is released then he and the team will release all of their (hard earned) hacking knowledge and data about how Goldeneye and Perfect Dark work internally, and this would be great to see in a book, or at least a series of online articles.
But please don't let this keep you away from working on Goldeneye X (or PD's single and multiplayer levels with weather, MPX ), as we're still waiting eagerly for these. |

Actually a series of articles would be great!
I've read some scattered information here and there about the place (that feature names like "Ice Mario" heavily ) but to compile it all into one concise read would be really something! _________________ No Mr. Bond, I expect you to be re-coded! |

There is so much history and many names to recall. This could seriously take a while, and a couple of key people to bring it all to light. Even some searching for GS codes online might help fill in some gaps. _________________

If I get some time I'll write something, might be a while though. Lots of interesting stuff and developments. |

That would be a tough project to do service to. I'm not even sure the gscentral archive goes back far enough. IcyGuy's and QuantumRift's contributions don't appear in it if memory serves. The trick will be to find people that were in the scene from the beginning, and that might be limited to just Sub and Wreck.
Quite a bit of development was done off the boards too, so you're going to have to track people down and interview them. A lot of things weren't made public until they were in a final form.
It isn't a linear history either, compounded with things that simply weren't understood properly at the time. Even related achievements weren't necessarily leading from one to another. As an example, the "emptier" codes really didn't empty anything but loaded stages without setups, and although the method was very similar to Krijy's setup reassignments that work was unrelated.
It would be a lot of work, but there'd be plenty of people here that would be interested in it. _________________ (\_/) Beware

I think it would be worth the effort. Since GoldenEye Forever has gone into LIMBO and hasn't been updated very much it seemed like a neat idea to really start at the beginning who and where everyone made these amazing discoveries. _________________ |

I use to be a biochemist. The method for coding DNA is: Work on the known stuff first and then see about going back and filling in the holes from scraps of knowledge that people can contribute. I'd say that once you start collating information into some sort of shape and form things will begin to come together.
It'd be best as a group approach so that everyone can submit snippets and just be respectful of that empty space because not even space itself is truly empty _________________ No Mr. Bond, I expect you to be re-coded! |

I'll dig out old documents, I have many from that era, and write something very long and comprehensive with specific names, etc, when I feel like writing a story, but general gist of phases were:
GS Pro 2.X - Randomly poking addresses, crazy (And still to this date) spectacularly random things
Couple More Multis loaded via one of these random codes (NTSC), PAL had almost all of them via similar code - this was huge news, even CodeMaster joined in (but to know about him...is another story)
Even a couple more multis loaded (via Wreck's new code)
GS Pro 3.X - Rise of the hacking that had purpose/targetting
Discovery of setup files, modifying objects, guards in multi, etc
Discovery most multis using multi code didn't load due to Start Points, now almost all loaded
Runway Setup Editor start - brute force hardcoded compression, only intended to edit coordinates
Decompression broken by MrHtFord, Zoinkity figured out gzip compression
GE Editor 1.0 - Wreck, me, and Zoinkity
PD Editor 0.X Source lost due to HD crash
GE Editor 2.0 (Visual added)
PD Editor returns sharing code
...then all of recent updates
There's a ton more, many PAL hackers contributed. You can see a lot of history in my GameShark Hacking Video, that ended that era for me and later ushered in the GE Editor.

This would be awesome in HERE and on VAULT as a locked archive for new people. I definitely would enjoy reading up on this. _________________ |

Don't forget the facemapper! That was huge news at the time. It even hit magazines. _________________ (\_/) Beware

Hah you're right. We did spend a lot of effort on it (not wasted, needed for GE Editor later), a lot it of it brute force rips from RAM. It did appear twice in N64 Magazine, not sure about others. I don't know how many people actually used it though to do serious replacement. I never got much feedback hehe. although you and Rune did make image packs for it. |

Oh wow. I had no idea Rune from gscentral helped with it. He seems like a nice dewd. Unlike a lot of flamers and trolls that weaseled their way into power to get on BAN trips as moderators and admins. The thing that literally destroyed gscentral and the forums back in the early 2000's. Funny how far I've come from being a noob forum user they used to hate on to that d*mned MultiplayerX guy. Graham (GE MASTER) is one of the only reasons I still hack GE or PD. He defended me when I was known as GOLDENHEART and was attacked for being too excited about the game. KARMA is a real b*tch....it will pay you back. _________________ |
