This is something that I'm surprised hasn't been a thing. I know nothing about source ports, but I was wondering what would the next stage after emulating GE, and that would be a source port.
As with that, you can add tons of custom code for visual upgrades, or even quality of life improvements. The only issue is that the GE source code isn't really available, and thus it'd require some time worth of re-learning the disassembly with a custom engine of sorts. Sorta like Doom 64EX, I guess.
