|

Way back in March of 2004 SubDrag & IceMario released the incredibly nifty GE/PD facemapper tools. You could upload a head or, well, anything you'd like wrapped on top of one via GameShark to the game and replace the texture that was there. Pure magic.
The RWP still hosts the NGC article about it, demonstrating its capabilities.
20 years later...nobody can really run a GameShark with anything modern (not well at least) but!! it also works with uncompressed savestates! Not quite the magic trick console is, and for emulation users swapping heads was succeeded by the Editor's image features. That's its own anniversary though, get some cake prepared.
If you've never tried it, dredge up a copy in celebration! You won't be disappointed!*

Hah. That and Citadel uploader probably never got widespread use, but still were pretty cool. |

How true. It was a tad too late, wasn't it? _________________ (\_/) Beware

I can still picture some of the faces people were trying to create...
Hulk Hogan, Freddy Krueger, Jason Voorhees, Scorpion, other Bond actors, etc.
It was a really fun tool to play around with.
Citadel uploader was awesome, too. Playing a "new" map on console was magical. And the fact the stans (clipping) were made by hand was incredibly impressive. |

Those early steps were so wonderful in their own right! I was finally able to get all the bonds into the game as were originally intended! _________________ No Mr. Bond, I expect you to be re-coded! |

That original Citadel uploader was bonkers, the way you'd pause the process, upload stuff for a specific configuration, then unpause and everything went flying where it should...or crash!
Was that one released publicly or just the uninsane version?
The generic uploader was a lot safer and could, with herculean effort, replace any loaded file that wasn't an image at runtime. It's how the Speccy emulator was first tested on console, taking advantage of the way the filetable will pull from dev hardware on a name miss.
Between the two you could do some neat things, but memory restrictions got in the way of the really cool stuff. There was this poorly-textured Elvis test and G5 MP. The rooms loaded in but the textures never quite worked the way they should. Other maps were too large in bytesize sadly.
All in all the facemapper was the most fun to goof around with. Tuxedo Proboscis Monkey for the win. |
