 |
|
The latest victim of the Year of Bitter Medicine Dragon is romhacking.net, no longer taking submissions and permanently going into read-only mode. The entire database is hosted on archive.org, nearly 12GB of data not counting the SQL database. For now, at least, the forum is still open.
Originally opened in 2005, it's been the most resilient general romhacking site on the net, far outlasting its predecessors and a fair number of successors. Keeping on the pseudo-legal side of the piracy chasm played a large part in that. Granted, the vast, vast majority of what they hosted fell in the pre-N64 era, maybe its impact isn't felt much in these circles. The breadth of Japanese translations is where it shined most; there are few places where you'd find visual novels spanning Famicom to Saturn, or non-western platforms like FM Towns and PC-98 in the same pool. There's a lot to be said when you can search by genera, not platform.
Sad to see it go. _________________ (\_/) Beware

It sucks to see a long-standing site go down, but at least the data is on archive.org. _________________ Also known as Spyster or Nyxem

Speaking of rom hacking, a Super Mario 3 hack I've been following for at least a decade (I may have even made a post about it at one time in here) is FINALLY set to be released next month. Made by DarkDhaiz (sp?) - the same hacker who made Mario Adventure a number of years ago, is behind this one. And it promises to be the best SMB3 hack to date.
And yeah, I coincidentally read about the shutdown of romhacking.net mere hours after it was announced, by pure coincidence as I check that place out a few times a year and just happened to click at that exact time. This news is unfortunate. |

Ah yes, and now through the power of not noticing responses for over a month Mario Adventure 3 is released and just as stunning as could be expected!
Played the original as well. It was very clever, yet intuitive. |

This is a bit of a bump, but...
It apparently wasn't announced, but there's some kind of mechanism for updates again. At the very least, news articles will be used to update patches, maybe make new entries. The function wasn't there a few weeks ago, who knows how long it will last or really what's going on at this point.
Anyway...
RHDN's semi-restarted after all? Who knows at this point... _________________ (\_/) Beware

Of course they have an abysmally-old GE-X patch. Patches don't get updated unless you submit an update.
Considering the download count, more people probably grabbed the patch from elsewhere in the first few minutes than have gotten it total from RHDN.
...Honestly, this and several other features reappearing are probably the result of the forum staff realizing the news submission system--the only part of the old system that was left on--is tied to both the forum and the old update submission system's database access. An exploit, in other words.
Doesn't exactly bode well. Maybe it's legit? Maybe it just appears there's an unofficial, unlinked discord that's the sole source of info about unannounced features besides, what? observation? Maybe just overthinking it?
Hopefully it doesn't get too far out of hand because the forums there are filled with useful info and it's easier to search when it isn't packed in some mummified archive. Ultimately it's the owner's decision how to handle things.
It would be nice if it became properly active again, and maybe the point is to leverage interest to turn the lights back on. ...or it's the prelude to something worse. Will Wood Snake year turn out better than Bitter Medicine Dragon? Will be fun to find out. _________________ (\_/) Beware
