I suppose I'm basing this on the apparent failure of PD Zero which really didn't become the smashing success of the original. Joanna Darks future? I don't know, I suppose they could keep going with it, but compare Joanna to Master Chief... I just don't hear or see much coming from Rare as in the past. They had incredible games for the N64 platform, but has the lack of success been because of staff departures? They has released Diddy Kong DS, which again goes back to the good ol days. Not sure, but what are going to be the big releases from these guys that will get us really excited? |

I can't really point the finger of blame at any one reason. Over the years, they've lost many of their key members. Much of the team that had worked on GoldenEye and Perfect Dark ended up leaving to create Free Radical. Their popular Time Splitters series was their attempt at replicating the success of the former Rare first-person shooters. Since the departure from Nintendo, the majority of games have been developed for the Xbox. When the Nintendo64 was released, it was a brand new world they were stepping into. It was time to get as creative as possible and show everyone just what they were capable of. No more sidescrolling action adventure games, but fully three dimensional levels and characters. They put all of their effort into designing some now classic titles. Once their spot in the gaming industry had been secured, perhaps they begin to try a little less to milk everything they could out of the system. With important people gone, less motivation to fight tooth-and-nail for a top position in their field, and a new owner in control of their future, these three issues may very well be why Rare's status has since declined in the minds of gamers around the globe. _________________
