I've finally gotten so tired of my crawling HP Pavilion, running on the Windows XP Home OS, that I decided today to reboot it. Only thing is, I can't seem to find out where I'm to do that. System Restore keeps coming up, but it won't go back any further than December of 2008. I'd like this thing to be completely wiped out, back to the factory defaults.

If anyone here knows how to perform this task, please let me know.

Okay, I believe I've made a back up. However, I'm not sure where I'm supposed to go to format this thing. Also, I don't think that this ever came with an Operating System CD. It had XP Home from the very beginning.

Hm. That kills that idea.

Well, here's something you can do instead...

1: Remove all unnecessary files and programs.

2: Do a spyware scan and a virus scan.

3: Download TuneUp Utilities, and run everything that looks helpful, but be sure to leave the defragmentation for last.

If this doesn't improve performance enough, either upgrade some parts or buy a whole new computer.

I've been going through all of my folders and deleting / removing / uninstalling everything I don't need. I'm just about to try a disk cleanup, then onto another task that's supposed to improve performance. If this doesn't help, I'll be tossing this one aside. I don't really need it, anyway. I do have the Compaq Pressario that I'm on now, which runs perfectly. I just like having a backup, incase anything happens.

If you don't have an operating system cd or system restore disc, you're pretty much out of luck. Which is too bad, because I'm sure you'd benefit greatly from a fresh install.

In addition to the suggestions given above, I'd also try the following:

Go to Start--->Run--->

Type "msconfig"

Go to the startup tab and uncheck everything that you don't think you need to run on startup (which is probably 90 percent of what is there.

Next thing you can do is go to control panel, then administrative tools, then services. Stop and disable any services you don't think you need running.

Finally, you can disable all the fancy graphical stuff windows xp does by right-clicking on MY COMPUTER, choose properties, go to the advanced tab, click performance settings, and then disable everything (or if you want to still keep the xp look and feel, disable everything EXCEPT for the last one).

^ TuneUp Utilities does all that, but quicker/easier, and it makes sure that nothing important gets turned off.

mmm, I never had a brand name pc, so I'm not exactly sure how the deal is, but, if you consider throwing it if you can't get it to work "the HP way" you may also consider going "generic".

Try to collect a list of your hardware from both the Windows device manager and apps such as SiSoftware Sandra, and of course open up your box to see what extra info you can get there.

Get the needed drivers for your hardware somehow. Checking on the HP site for your computer model may turn something up too. I can help you find that stuff if you want, if you tell me what computer it is.
After all that is done, download some bootcd such as Hiren's BootCD.

With that, repartition/format the hell out of your HD It has plenty of tools for that, and also many other tools you can check out for testing and stuff. It even has a Live XP system in the last version.

Once that's done, install whatever OS you want/have.

After performing a massive deletion spree, removing or deleting tons of unused programs, and running a few different cleanup operations, it seems to be running a hell of a lot better. I was actually very surprised at how well the Internet loaded on it. It usually takes about two minutes to initialize it the first attempt, but it came up in about five-to-ten seconds. Perhaps I won't need to worry about formatting my hard drive, afterall.

It's the most effective windows maintenance procedure you'll ever do... 'cause it rides you of the nuissance of having to mantain it

A little trick I've learned when it comes to having to clean up Windows is to set up a dual installation on your computer with the second installation acting simply as a backup/troubleshooting version. That way if your primary installation gets corrupted or has problems, you can boot your secondary installation not only for an immediate clean backup, but also to troubleshoot your primary version from there (think of this as being even better than safe mode).
