very true
it looks like i have been using emulators a little too much.
it would be cool to find a flash cart that they could come up with some kind of chip that can help the n64 and store a "textures" folder in its memmory.... |

I think texture paks can only be used thanks to high level emulation of RCP microcodes, and the purpose of making a real hardware clone of the N64 would be precisely to recreate the RCP in low level fashion.
in HLE, you can replace textures because you document the workings of a given microcode and make a proxy that can detect texture related commands and inject your custom texture replacements when translating the display lists to PC compatible Direct3D and/or OpenGL commands.
In "direct mode" hardware this would be impossible since you are intended to "run" these display lists and the microcode on the RCP and you can't have that "proxy" to intercept textures.
a hardware N64 that could do that would be more akin to an HLE emulator implemented in dedicated hardware than to a proper N64 clone. Not that it would be impossible to do, but I find it rather pointless, at least if they were going to implement the current generation of HLE code, and anyway, the hardware requirements and results wouldn't be too different from what you'd need on a PC.
Software emulators can be mantained more easily and you get upgraded performance when you upgrade your PC, and also being HLE and non perfect, you'd still have to enter tons of settings and stuff, and a soft emulator is easier and faster to operate.
What I would really like for the day that they make the first N64 clones (like there are NES and SNES clones), would be they extend the N64 hardware.
Given the N64 memory map, it would be possible to have a lot more RAM (what about 12 or 16 MB of RAM, or 32....). We could have a CPU that, while keeping the clock speed to mantain compatibility with existing software, would be more cycle-efficient as to improve framerates like in emulators, and better busses for killing the bottleneck on the acess to memory that the N64 has. It could also have a dual speed mode, like The GBC and Wii compared to GB Mono and GameCube respectively, for future developments. Bigger texture cache would be a must (they even complained about it back in the day). Of course, none of these extensions would improve existing software since they would not make use of them (that's the thing with extensions), except for the CPU efficiency bit and the more efficient bus, which would help reduce slowdowns. |
