I had always assumed norgate did most of them, didn't realize kirkhope did much. But that's very cool.

Dude, the PD Ending Credits sound sick! Very Happy
I like some of the subtle changes and differences in tone or instrument to certain tracks. I still think GE and PD have incredible soundtracks, even if very primitive compared to the heavily orchestrated scores newer games boast.

Simple is often better, in my opinion. Some of the modern game soundtracks are too orchestral, and most of the time the music sounds too familiar!

With GE and PD, each level had it's own musical identity. Shame that it doesn't happen much these days!

Excellent point.
When I hear the score to many of the Rare games from the N64, I can instantly picture a stage or location. When it comes to newer games, it isn't so clear-cut. Some may stand out more, but most just seem to blend together. I think they concentrate more on an overall theme for the game, rather than one for each level.

for me, the problem that affect vg music nowadays, of all genres, but specially for orchestral, is basically that they concentrate too much on making pretty harmonic transients and forget completelly, or almost completelly, about MELODY.
There's no distinguishable melody in them, they are all just forgettable and annoying. It's all just a numbing continuum of orchestral harmonic passages almost indistinguishable from each other. You listen to any given section of these tracks and you'd have it very hard telling what part of the track you are in, while in games like PD or GE you have some melody to follow, and good ones at that I should say.

Just got a reply from Grant Kirkhope!

"I might have some beta GoldenEye stuff, but I honestly don't know, I'd
have to have a look through all my files and see."

Now that I have mentioned it hopefully something should surface, if he still has the midi files of course! My fingers are crossed!

Yeah, just view the page source. That's what I did since I couldn't be bothered installing Quicktime again.

if you have firefox you can use the "view page info" dialog to download linked items, including "embed" items, like the ones in that page.
