Are they region specific or doesn't it matter where you get them? |

My guess is it'll work, but I have no idea. |

I'm pretty sure they're region free, but make sure you get first-party Nintendo, I had a third party one burn out on me in a few months. |

Having both a PAL and an NTSC N64's myself, I can assure from personal experience that ALL N64 HARDWARE is compatible among regions.
You can use expansion paks, controllers of any kind, controller paks, rumble paks, even powerblocks (but you have to provide the right current to them or they will burn, of course) bought in any country on any N64 and it will work.
Only exception to this rule is the 64DD, which, having it's own boot-rom, won't boot on pal machines nor any of the games that use it (although some people have done bizarre experiments and got PAL F-Zero X, which seems to be the only PAL game that retains the so called 64DD hooks, to try to communicate with a 64DD with the JAP-only expansion disk)
I bought a bare NTSC unit (just the unit, not even the jumper pak was included) and a Conker's Bad Fur Day cart and I make it work with all the accesories and cables from my local PAL console.
Another little issue, in case you are interested to know, is that AV cables seem to have a stupid little regional issue.
I don't know why they designed it that way, but PAL AV and S-video cables have a 75kohm resistor bridging the video line (and luminance in case of s-video) and ground to bring down the voltage level which is excesive as it comes out of the console's multiav port in PAL units.
This causes that, when using NTSC cables that don't have the resistor on PAL consoles, the image is too bright and washed out, and if you use PAL cables with NTSC unit the picture is too dark and you don't see crap.
Whatever... |
