Hello, I'm new here, and I'm interested in playing Goldeneye online. I've been playing the game on the N64 since I was six or seven years old, and it's one of my favorite games of all time.

The only thing stopping me from downloading the emulator and playing online are the legal issues I've heard surrounding emulation...I own a copy of the game for N64, I bought it used at a game store. I think I've heard that if you own a copy of the game, it's okay. But I'm not certain. Can someone help clear this up for me?

Technically, if you own the game, you can have a "backup" of it because you own the original.

Most people who use the forums use emulation, but I only play games that I own on the console. I think there is some law of if you download a game you DON'T have, you have to delete it within 24 hours.

It's a gray area, don't even worry about it, you're not going to get into any trouble with the law, no FBI agents are going to break down your door.

I think US law says you're allowed to have a backup but you have to make it yourself and it is only for archival purposes - meaning that you can't use it if your cartridge is still in working condition, something like that. I've also read that the law only applies to disk-format games however, cartridges are patented technology and the devices to back them up are technically infringing on that patent.

But as I said don't worry about it, download/backup a copy of the game and enjoy playing it online.

Not true, that was something made up entirely by one of the early ROM sites and apparently a bunch of other sites copied the disclaimer until it was accepted as fact by most people. Laughing

Alright. Just one more question about this. Rare made this magnificent game. Using an emulator isn't showing a disrespect to them, is it?

Rare should be happy that people are still playing a game that they made a over decade ago, no matter how it is done. It's an honour to think we'd rather spend time on a N64 era title, when we've come so far since in technology. PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Nintendo Wii. Somehow, they just can't seem to create a game anywhere near as enjoyable as GoldenEye. That really goes to show you something. Smile

Yeah, and it's not like there isn't room for improvement in GE, it's just that every game that fixed something wrong with it has broken other things that made it great.
