So we've all heard by now that Nintendo's Revolution is said to be able to play games from all of their past systems. What we don't know is how. Here are a few theories...

Plug & Play: This would work like any cartridge based console. Basically, you'd have different ports for different system's games. One for NES, another for SNES, and one more for N64. You'd just take your game, pop it in and start it up. Hell, if they went to the trouble of installing all of the readers, they'd allow old controllers too. Well, this seems doubtful. I mean, that's a lot of extras to box up, unless they sold them seperately. Not only would it take up space and look strange, but it'd also require you to buy a whole whack of older titles, many of which are extremely difficult to find. Scratch that one? Maybe.

Games O'plenty: A disc that contains selected games from older Nintendo consoles. Just insert the disc and choose a title. But which games do you pick to release when you have so many options? Let the gamers decide, perhaps? With so many opinions from people of all ages, it'd be a wide variety. You'd have discs volumes 1 through 97 by the time you add up all the classics alone. Likely? Could happen.

ROMS - Oh, what a dirty word: Here's something game companies just love. But what if they sold them? Yes, you could buy the ROM to play on your system. It'd have to be damn cheap, since there have been a boatload of games released. Just send them a check or money order, use your credit card, or the banking buddy PayPal. You'd have to consider file sharing and hackers, which could serverely cut into cashflow. As if they don't have enough as it is. Possibility? We'll see.

The only way I can picture this being pulled off well, is emulation using downloaded ROMs. Game ROMs can be ripped open, modified, then played on a PC. Perhaps, if looked into, the same could be done with these games on a Revolution. If this is so, we'd almost certainly be able to get new multi stages on games such as GoldenEye and Perfect Dark to play on console. On top of that, a graphical upgrade and framerate boost should be evident. One can only hope that this is so. However, we'd have to give the online ability a long, hard look. This would put classic N64 FPS games back into the mainstream gamers hands and even rival Halo and Half-Life.

yep, im pretty sure it'll be some kind of "secured" *cough cough* rom with an integrated emulator in the console. That brings my other point in the other thread where i said that since it's supposedly a download service, we will probably able to get these games on a pc, then open and modify, add, remove things, and even create our own little program(some kind of gameshark) or maybe simply put them directly into the game. But if we take goldeneye for example, we can probably forget things like citadel or any other workaround done so far with the gameshark to access new levels or parts of levels, since if it comes out, it'll probably be "updated" a little, and cleaned from all the crap...but hopefully if they bring it out they will add all sp levels in mp(Probably won't happen but we all know it could be so easy to do with all the power the console will have compared to the original n64) and it oculd be fun to add pd maps or new mp only maps like complex.

If anything, it'll be a direct port (or copy) of the regular game we have on N64. Since Rare neither has the Bond license nor partnership with Nintendo, they wouldn't make any modifications to the ROM. Yes, it would be easy enough to do so, but it's not going to happen. People have been able to make changes to GoldenEye's ROM, including adding in new stage setups, though it can only be played on Emulators thus far. With enough brainpower and patience, it's completely possible. I remember Zoinkity even mentioning that he'd try to put a Runway multi map in the ROM if I did a good one...

I'm almost positive they will use ROMs. They've said you download the games, although I like that PLug & Play idea too, but that won't happen.

They said they would "touch up" games, but Wrecks got a point. They don't own Goldeneye, so it probably won't have anything changed.

My question is how are you going to edit the ROM? How will you be able to get it to the PC, or is there a way to someone edit it another way. All I know is 4P Surface with Snipers would be amazing if it had a good framerate.

well since its supposed to use memory stick of some kind(can't remember the format) well you can easily plug that into a computer hehe, and it would be stupid not to be able to get them on your memory stick since 512 megs of space inside the ocnsole isn't much, so if you want to download new games and don't lose one, you'll need to back some up in a way...and if there is net play, there will probably be a way to connect to the net another way and transfer them somehow, or with the help of a modchip if there is any security inside the console

Any way you splice it, there is no way that Nintendo would leave GoldenEye off the list of available games. It had to have been one of their best selling N64 titles, winning multiple awards for its superior gameplay. It was the first great FPS ever made, blowing the doors off of the genre and setting a new standard for all to follow. Although I'm a Nintendo fanboy at heart, I will not hesitate to abandon them if they choose to avoid GoldenEye. I wouldn't mind it if it were a direct copy of the original, without a single noticable difference, so long as I could play it on the Revolution. Sure, it should look nicer automatically, but that doesn't mean that it'll play any better. Online would be phenominal, although I'm not going to raise my hopes any higher than they already are. Hacking is the man thing, in my mind. No matter if there is an Action Replay for the system or not, we should still get to make modifications to the game ROM on a PC. I know Nintendo wouldn't be pleased, but it's not as if we are learning trade secrets of game design and exploiting them. We're simply taking a classic and adding more replay value. I mean, what's a couple of new multiplayer stages gonna hurt the big 'N'?

Pretty much the only reason I was going to consider getting a Revolution was because of playing Goldeneye on it. Then I saw there doing some cool stuff with it, but I'm still nor so sure I'll get it if there's no Goldeneye.

It's not like adding single player levels to multiplayer is going to make them lose money, but actually mroe people will get the game when they hear about all the cool stuff that can be done.

If the game can be hacked, doesn't that mean the multiplayer could be made whether or not Nintendo does it? Isn't it possible, as long as it has a connection to the internet, that there is a way to hack the game make sort of make online play? I don't know much, but that sounds possible to me. Maybe a lot of work, but possible.

Since you mentioned it a lot, how do you edit the Goldeneye file? I don't imagine it's just one bi file, i thing it's .jpg s and .dat s and stuff compiled into one. Like they might design a gun and make that a small file and a building and stuff and put it together. Like when you install something on a pc it goes from setup.exe to many files in different folders.

well since its some kind of download and that the revolution will have an emulator in it to run the game, it'll be some kind of roms, that doesnt mean it will be the same format as the roms we know thats all i guess Smile

okay.... interestin then...
man, it would be sweet to see all the new levels.
i think regardless of what nintendo does, someone will find a way to hack the games. its inevitable. there will always be codes and cheats. not to forget hacks. it would be amazing to see citadel on a console. i would love to play it on my tv. higher framerate? awesome. heh, if it wasnt for people like us, old games would be pointless. the only reason i am still into goldeneye is because of all the hidden memory levels. Citadel was huge!!! think about how huge it would be if someone could make a working 1p level would be amazing. even better would be if it was possible to make objectives... that would take so long it is unthinkable.

Who thinks we have just scratched the surface of the possibilities?

To be frank, many of the GoldenEye hackers are growing tired of the game. Yes, even I have my moments when I sit back and wonder why I still bother. There's so much we've done over the years. Multiplayer has been the biggest thing as of late. But with the slow framerates and frequent blackouts, it almost seems pointless to put out certain maps on the N64. If they'd work on the Revolution, we might have a better reason to keep on hacking. It all boils down to how the console processes the game. Let's just cross our fingers and hope that Nintendo's next system will be able to play hacked GoldenEye ROMs, beautifully and flawlessly...
