I lurk there, keeping an eye on the hacking projects, but I rarely have any desire to post.

Yep, I had a Sonic 1 project in the works about three years ago, I think. I liked ESE II's interface, but preferred using SonEd 2 and a split disassembly because SonEd2 lets you place objects more precisely. I highly recommend going that route even if you have no plans to change any code, the disassembly is still really easy to work with and having each level in its own file is great if something goes wrong and breaks you hack, it's very easy to port everything over to working code. If you dig really far back in Engineering & Reverse Engineering you'll find my old Dragonsbrethren Sonic 1 topic, screenshots and the project itself are long gone though, never had the drive to finish it beyond Green Hill Zone and a tiny portion of Marble and Labyrinth Zone.

I had an area in Green Hill Zone Act 3 where you went through two of those S tunnels, then went around about five loops, then another S tunnel, then three more loops...I learned about Sonic 1's speed cap real quick and what happens when you go off an area where the screen boundaries change too fast. Laughing
