I was looking at IGN's list of the top 25 games of all time, and a few jumped out at me as worthy of playing:

15) Grim Fandango
13) System Shock II
7) Baldur's Gate II
5) Fallout
1) X-Com: UFO Defense

I've never played any of these games before, I was wondering if anybody else out there has and whether or not they're any good. I downloaded X-Com UFO Defense yesterday and it seems like an awesome game - problem is its so old that it runs too fast on my PC.

And Grim Fandango in particular looks interesting - I was always a fan of the older Lucas Film Adventure games (Maniac Mansion, Zak McKracken and the Alien Mindbenders, etc), this looks like a logical progression of that series, even though again, its 10 years old.

X-Com RULES ASS! ONE OF THE GREATEST GAMES EVER MADE!
Just try to finish it, GREAT SURPRISE!

System Shock2... one of the scariest games ever made, good, but the AvP original beats it.

Others..... sucks.

ok so i didnt look at the ign list, but system shock 2 stood out so i feel like i need to do some serouse mental digging and think up of my favorite games of the past. Yes i played some atari, commidor, intellivison stuff but nes is where my memories start. im sure im going to miss some games here but these are the ones that i can think of right now.

1. Mario 1 (ya it was the first for me. 4 years old, it started it all. Man who would have thought that one game wouldv had me sitting by my pc at 4 in the morning looking at jiberish numbers like some guy from the matrix figuring how these games work. This is kinda embarising to share. but i will anyways. When i first got hte game, whenever i made it to a castle stage i would cry and get my dad to come beat it for me. 3 weeks after that i beat the game and he couldnt beat me at any game since.

2. Zelda ( ya another classic game, ill also put the 2nd one here to. alot of people didnt like it but i still thought it was a great game

3. Contra (oh yeah. nothing like a good old game of co-op contra. The thing that lacks in many games is the change of game types. First level was side scroll, the second was kinda a forward moving thing, waterfall was a sidescroll but you moved upwards. Jeeze i cant beleive i can still remember this stuff from so many years ago.)

4. metroid, smb3, mike tysons puchout, bubble bobble, ya theres many more but i cant think of them. funny how i cant remember what i ate this morning but i still know how to beat every char in mike tyson from 15 years ago

SNES

1. first and foremost. I have to say super metroid is probably my favorite game ever made. If you havnt played it, do so. I think the whole technology gap might not make it seem soo good but this game had me playing for months trying to get 100%. And it truly shows miyamoto`s phylosophy of letting the player figure everything out for themselfs. Instead of leaving a cookie trail for the player to follow.

2. Zelda. link to the past. Another amazing game with so much play time. Another game that made you think and had you scratching your head for hours on end to figure out how to progress( ya i dont do stratagy guides. im a fan of riddles and puzzels. ill drive myself insane to figure something out before i look for help.)

4. Mortal kombat 2. Your either a Street Fighter fan or an MK fan. I remember me and my bro would get up at 5 in the morning before anyone else was awake and battle it out with MK2. Sure 1 was good, and so was 3, but i think MK2 for SNES was by far the best of the MK series. Even the genesis MK2 and others did not compare(oh i guess i should metion, i was a nintendo kid. Never owned a genesis system. Ya sonic was cool, so was vector man, but i did not play those till later) Since then the MK series went downhill.

5. FFIII. Ya 1 and 2 were good, so were chrono trigger, earthbound, and secret of mana, but FF3 stood out the most. Im not the biggest fan of rpg`s(aside of 2 years to diablo 2 and 4 years to WOW) but i enjoyed this one consideraby. I think earthbound deserves its own section but whatever

6. Mario world, mario kart, yoshis island. Ya mario games killed it.

7. Donkey Kong 1 and 2 had me consumed for a while. The ones after that i found too repetitive

Ok so talkin to a buddy on msn right now and hes sayin what about mega man. Was never a big fan of it. I know many people were but it just never did anything for me... moving on

So youve all heard the expression, what came first, the chicken or the egg. Well i cant remember sure what was first, Wolfenstien or doom( i think i played wolf shareware first) but either way both left a huge impact. DOOM is probaly my favorite game ever. Its where i first started making mods. I could probably recite line by line of its source code, run each map in my head, tell you where every secret is, and much much more. You can still find me on occasion playing online with Zdeamon(check it out)

DUKE3D. When i was 10 i mowed my neighboroughs(wow i cant spell) lawn for his copy of duke 3d. You could imagin a 10 year olds eyes lighting up as the pixelated stripper at the bar takes off her top while duke says `shake it baby`. Man every duke line is a classic and so is the game. Should i mention that Ken Silverman is a genoious. People in the fps always hail John Carmack as god. Dont get me wrong hes a smart dude but Ken was crazy for his time. A quote from carmack about people that he thought he should have hired or wanted to work along with.

Quote:
If I had to pick who I think is just the most talented, it would probably be Ken Silverman, the guy that did the BUILD engine. He does engines and tools. He's great as an editor. He writes all the code for everything, and he's just extremely talented. I think it was 3D Realms' worst decisions not to coddle him, or whatever it took, to keep him on board. I think if he was still working directly for 3D Realms, they would have a Quake-type game shipped by now, just because he's extraordinarily good.

crazy how he wrote this engine in his early 20`s in college. If you ever get a chance look at his voxel engine work do so. If not in my lifetime. but voxels will be the next huge leap in 3d crap(well the next step away from polygons)

ok back on track, so n64 comes along..

1. goldeneye. should i even go on. your all here because of this game and i think no explanation is needed

2. Zelda. Ya if you owned an 64 you no doubt had this game. classic.

3. SW SOTE????? what does that mean. Star wars shadows of the empire. A very good game that was very underestimated. Like my Contra statement, this game had a variety of different modes of play that lack in todays games. FPS, 3rd person, flying, driving.... it was all there

4. mario 64 was the first game i played for the 64. amazing

ya perfect dark isnt on the list. dont be haten. It never stood out as anything more than a GE clone

mabey at this point i should mention some gameboy games. Zelda, mario, thats all i can remember.

Also i never had a playstation 1(the whole nitendo kid thing). But what i can remember playing at friends houses. Crash bandicoot, FF7, Metal gear solid, resident Evil 2 stood out.

Then there was quake. and then quake 2. Edge rails anyone??????

Half-life!!! Too sick. by far one of my fav games to date. Again like super metroid, this is a must play. But you all im sure already have. so why talk about it.

System shock 2. The game i saw to make me start writing this huge list up(4 beers and a half bottle of wine at this point) . To be honest i didnt play this game till many years later. I gues halflife over powerd it. but im guessing it was done around this time and was an amazing game(again if you havnt played it... do so)

now to the online fps. Quake 3 and unreal tournament. A chance to test your skills against people from all over. Is anyone playing quake live now??? Free quake 3 in your web browser.

Alright im getting tired. its 4 in the morning here. More games should be mentioned, many have been missed. But if you missed some of these great games in the past i suggest you try them out.

Oh god just checked out that list.
So many good games in it.
But Deus Ex is only on 20. position... Sad

I really don't understand HalfLife 2 on that list.
It isn't very good game on any meter.
Too linear to my taste, and the plot is horrendous.
Not a game even close to the first one, strange too, that Doom wasn't on that list at all, only some bad sequels. Maybe those guys like graphics most?

But yeah, great games, gladly I have played them all.
Very Happy

That IGN lists change quite often 'thou.
Deus Ex has been elected to number one 3 times in their Top100 games of all time, but now it can't even win on PC games... Rolling Eyes

Shame, only FPS game that really challenges GE or PD in my opinion (there are other great FPS games too, and maybe even better in multiplayer, but still... I'm a retromaniac Very Happy )

just finished mass effect for the PC. THe game was amazing. From a story/cinimatic point of view i can say this is probably the best ive ever seen. The team battle coordination couldve been executed better but it was still a great play. It was kinda easy. i think i only died a couple times. I suggest you guys give it a try. I think i beat it in around 15 hours, and im sure the way the game is laid out theres probably another 15 hours of side quest stuff. Well worth the money.

Most of the games today are too easy.
I just played the new Bionic Commando through on PC, it took only 10 hours on second difficulty level (Hard), I could have played it in 6 hours or so, but tried to find the secrets...
I think I will play it through on hardest level also (Commando) 'cause it wasn't too bad, media has smashed it, but it was sure fun to play, good and fun controls after getting used to.
