I was pretty excited to see this. A brand new Super Mario Bros. side-scrolling platformer! It looks a lot like the old games we know and love, but with obvious graphical improvements. There's supposedly 80 or more totally new levels to explore, and supports up to 4-Players in the same stage at the same time. You can work together, or against eachother. I had a smile on my face the whole time while watching the trailer. Finally, the classic structure is brought back to the Mario franchise.

I love how Nintendo go back to their roots.
It just goes to show that "If it ain't broke, don't try to fix it!" |

Yeah, this looks pretty cool. I have to say though, I was a bit disappointed with the first New Super Mario Bros., I just didn't think it compared to SMB3 or SMW. I'll definitely be picking this up, anyway. Mario Galaxy 2 is coming out too, I've got to finish up the first one, I got it along with three other Wii games off eBay and I just kind of threw it aside after the first two galaxies even though I was having a ton of fun with it. |

Yeah, I also just read about the new Super Mario Galaxy. I'm pretty happy to hear about that one, too. The first was a lot of fun, and offered a very unique gaming experience. If the sequel follows suit, we'll have one more great Mario game to add to the ever-growing list.
Edit: Found a trailer for it on YouTube...

Looks pretty awesome. Not so much more-of-the-same, either. They've added Yoshi into the mix, which should be fun. Also, those Bullet Bills are wicked looking. _________________

Got my hands on a copy of the "New Super Mario Bros. Wii" a few days ago. I've been able to play it alone, as well as with both one and two other players. It really is a lot of fun, actually. Though it does have somewhat of the SMB3 feel to it, it's far more along the lines of SMW. Which, believe it or not, I kind of prefer.
One disappointing thing, is that the first player has to be Mario. Which means that if you're playing alone, you must be Mario. Not really something a Luigi fan (like me) cares to endure. You only have a choice in the matter when playing multiplayer. Still, player one is Mario, no matter what.
While multiplayer can be fun, it can become quite frustrating...
Accidentally knocking eachother off edges, taking more than one power-up from a box as they spring out at you, breaking character bubbles mistakingly over pits or other dangers, straying too far behind another player and getting killed off screen (as an encouragement for you stick together), relying on using a bubble to keep up with far ahead players who just end up dying (ending the stage), someone bouncing off your head and screwing up your jump, trying to run down a hall with thwomps or screwers and getting blocked by somebody, trying to find secrets while others keep moving forward, waiting for them to catch up to you and getting nailed in process, etc, etc, etc.
That aside, it is fun - just so long as you try and keep a light mood and don't freak out whenever something happens that was entirely out of your control. There's endless continues, anyway, so you'll always get to come back and join the gang after losing all your lives. Multiplayer isn't really the way to beat the game, it's an excuse to keep playing it. A one player adventure would allow you to better learn the maps, finding all the secrets... without wanting to throw your remote at whoever is messing you up. _________________

yep, luigi is better than mario.
so if there is 4 players, what characters are players 3 and 4?
and yes, SMB3 is better than SMW.

I saw a huge display of the game when I was at Walmart the other day, and wanted to pick up a copy pretty bad, but passed on it. I know I'll probably have it cleared in a day or two, like the DS original, and I didn't want to "waste" the $50. I know it wouldn't really be a waste because I'm not the kind of person to stop playing a game after I beat it (obviously, I'm here, right?), but I'd rather pick it up a few months from now when the price drops.
I've heard a lot of complaints about the game being too easy, but everyone seems to forget how easy SMB3, SMW, and even the original are now. I'm sure that if you took a copy of the game back in time to when I was five and playing SMB3 for the first time, I'd suck at it just as bad as I did that back then. |

I'm about halfway through it, so far. I'd be a lot further along if I was always playing solo. It hasn't been all that difficult, but you can feel it increasing as you progress. Some of the Star Coins take a bit of thinking and searching, forcing you to run and jump against walls to see if there are secret locations hidden behind. I also keep forgetting that you can score coins by tossing a Koopa-Troopa, barrel, or other object into them. In certain situations it's the only way to get a Star Coin, which would otherwise lead you to death. Other than that, it's pretty standard Mario stuff. A great deal of fun and very nostalgic.
Yeah, SMW wasn't all that hard to complete. Finding all the secret goals could be tricky, but that's what made it so interesting. I also really enjoyed the final fight with Bowser, where you had to toss those wind-up Koopa's up in the air and knock him on the head. Great scenario. The whole "96*" percentage rating was rather annoying, though. I played through that sucker looking for other secrets, collecting every Yoshi coin, all for nothing. I wanted that final four percent, but found out later on that you couldn't get it.
Price drop... Yeah, Mario games (especially the more popular titles) don't seem to go down in value too quickly. Mario Party 8 and Super Smash Bros. Brawl are still up there. I've been wanting to get Brawl for a while, but it just won't go on sale. You could grab a used copy for a bit cheaper, if you don't mind buying second-hand games. I know it can be sketchy.
Aside from Mario, the other three characters are: Luigi, Yellow Toad, and Blue Toad. _________________

Heh, I've had great luck with secondhand games. I'd say at least half of my GameCube library came from other people, still shrinkwrapped. I don't know who buys a game and then never touches it, but they're willing to sell them for ridiculously low prices. I got Metroid Prime 2 (by far my favorite in the series) for $6 brand new off someone, no more than a year after it came out.
I got my copy of Mario Galaxy off eBay along with three other Wii games for $50, too. I paid the price of one game for four; those were used, but in great shape, with all of the packaging. |

Strangely, no less than twenty-four hours after saying that I've been wanting to get Super Smash Bros. Brawl but have been waiting for the price to go down... Found it new at a Blockbuster for $39.99 on clearance. They also had Super Paper Mario for the same price. I'm actually thinking that it might have been a better choice, as Brawl really isn't grabbing me. Even the story mode isn't doing much to improve my opinion. Well, considering Brawl is a popular title and I know a guy who owns a used game store, I'm sure he'll give me a good trade deal on something, if it doesn't hold my interest.
I've had pretty good luck with used games, but there's been one or two discs that've had trouble reading. I think one of those might've been a rental, actually. Yeah, Resident Evil II for the PlayStation. When you went to walk into the "Y" shaped room at the beginning of the lab near the ending (where you have to insert an item to restore power) on Claire's disc, the music would play... but the screen would remain black. You couldn't progress any further. Always a treat.
It kind of boils down to history...
Careful owner: Good (everything near mint, all booklets / inserts)
Casual owner: Okay (mostly all good, some missing inserts)
Previous rental: Poor (scratched discs, damaged / missing booklets) _________________
