I was wondering if there was potential for us to be able to play roms on our Wii's when they finish a newer version of their n64 emulator for the wii. Currently Goldeneye, and many other games, aren't compatible. If they make it compatible will hacked roms work also? Or are my hopes crushed? |

The name of the emulator for Nintendo Wii is "Wii64". Feel free to Google it. I believe a new beta will be out by new years or new year's day. A lot of people have been asking for Goldeneye to work better than 10% effiency, so I think it might be adjusted. Anyone else excited of the potential possibility to play ROM's on the Wii? |

No. Maybe if it was with Nintendo's emulator, which blows everything on the PC out of the water, I would be, but not this. Not when we can't even have a perfect experience on a much more powerful PC. It doesn't help that these homebrew emulators are usually just a PC emulator's code ran through a compiler targeting whatever platform they're to run on, with only the smallest amount of changes made to get them working, and no real optimization. |

yep, Wii64 is a port of the Mupen64 code to the GC/Wii architecture, which is the only portable N64 out there AFAIK.
Having portable emus is great, but their achilles talon is always performance, since they are coded with the idea of it having to be able to run on any/most platforms with a compile and some minor changes, as DB has explained.
I don't know what the Wii64 team has in mind in terms of optimization, but the more optimization they do, the more they will strain from the main mupen64 trunk, which would hurt portability.
For now, GE and PD are probably far from being playable on it.
On the other hand, once/if they get them to work, hacked roms should, in principle, be also compatible, but I would not expect speeds to be too great. |
