Kaillera recorder doesn't like our ROM names

If you have ever tried to record a hacked goldeneye ROM over a Kailera server using mupen beta recorder, you would notice that an error message is received upon ROM start. However, i noticed that this error did not afflict a beta rom i made, which was simply titled "[ventz]" inside the brackets.

So, after a bit of testing, i deduced it was because the rom name was too long. With this rule in mind, i found that the limit was 20 characters, which doesn't count spaces.

Considering the restrictions this would have on the naming of our ROM's in the ini files, i decided to looking into and alternate recording module. It was then that i discovered that it is apparently integrated into the client

Due to this, unless i overlooked an obvious solution, we need to change the names of our hacked ROMs in the ini file. Of course, with all the other information in the current naming system, we would be restricted to an insufficient amount of characters to convey what was in the ROM.

Thus, i decided that an alternate title structure would be the only feasible solution. However, if we were all to use different name formats, our ROMs would appear in different places in ROM list's of people who have a wide array of games. Thus, i propose the following naming convention:

Code:
"GE007[Map Name Here]"


So, "GE007[Wreck's Map Pack]" or "GE007[E-S Map Pack 0.6]" would be acceptable.

Of course, whether you choose to use this format relies on how valuable you think recording with mupen is. As most recording software exhausts much more CPU than the mupen recorder and slows down the game, it becomes a much more viable option to record with mupen first, and then record the footage of the game with a video recorder from the mupen playback system. This allows for a cleaner recording and a less laggy match.

Gaining the ability to record our maps in an efficient manner would greatly further our publicity and ignite interest in playing hacked maps and playing GE itself. Not to mention all those funny moments can finally be preserved and shown to all!

It's unfortunate, since the current format we've been using is quite good. I wouldn't really want to change it completely, especially since it's only benefitting those who make recordings of online matches. You're right about the videos being a great promotion of our cause, though. Excellent job identifying the problem, E-Sol.

If you take a stab at it, using latest ini, I can use that one isntead and all future levels will be limited to 20.

I've never been able to get Mupen's recorder working. I wonder if this is why? In any case, if you're going to be doing new names, I'd recommend this format:

GE - Author - Map Name

(or the reverse, Map Name - Author)

It saves a bit of space (no brackets, no apostrophe-s) and is still pretty descriptive. Perfect Dark could use PD, meaning the same amount of characters for author and map names would be available in both. You can use "Db" or "DKK" (preferred) for my stuff, since my name uses up almost all the space by itself, heh. I'd suggest you post the new names here before they go live, so we can make sure everything is good.

And to make sure we're happy with the new names our custom ROM's have been given. I'm not opposed to the format change, even though the reduction does take away from the description. I sort of like how DB set it up, but what if we use a colon after "GE"?...

(sixteen characters, without spaces?)

Maybe more people should test this theory before changing our current format, just to be sure it isn't something to do with E-Sol's computer.

The colon isn't allowed in filenames, though, so I don't know how it would react to that. If it has trouble with strings over 20 characters, who knows what other limitations it has. I'd test myself, but I don't have Mupen set up right now.

I wasn't quite sure what he meant by that. Either it means that the spaces don't count toward the total, or that the twenty also consists of the spaces. Maybe he can shed some more light on this.

Hmmm, I didn't think about that. Is there any OS that does support the colon character in filenames? Even if, I guess that still poses a problem for those with an OS that doesn't.

The spaces don't seem to contribute to the character limit.

I originally thought the character limit was 21-22, because i was testing with a format of "0123456789 0123456789 0123" (and every failure i would subtract 1-3 numbers from the end) but then i noticed i could put in as many spaces i wanted without going over.

I think this is because they are omitted from processing when the actual game starts, as the error message always lists the ROM name without spaces in it.


Anyway, everyone I've played with on kaillera (and i play fervently, nearly every day, so that's a lot of people) had difficulty recording hacked ROMs. Regardless, it would be a good idea to confirm the character limit on other computers.

Weird. Guess they strip spaces. I don't see why it's limited at all. OK, well if anyone redoes the mupen ini from latest send it over.

Well, after some testing, colons will pass with the recorder, but cannot be in file names without being mistaken for a system file. thus this eliminates the ability to manipulate saves effectively.


So, we'll need to change the format (while retaining or reducing the character limit) or replace the colon with something else that doesn't violate windows file saving rules.


Any suggestions?
