I wonder if they included co-op mode in split screen...
there was some ideas about it earlier...
that would be awesome.

I'm' intrigued. So they remade from ground up? What was reused from N64 version/extracted? Is it interpreting N64 assembly code for it??
What does this mean?

# Support custom content that can also be compatible with the N64 version
How? |

The Doom sourcecode is already available (this was based on Doom3D, an existing port of the code to Direct3D), but a lot of changes were made for the N64 version. Those changes were recreated by figuring out the new data formats and disassembling the N64 ROM for code changes. The included wadgen program extracts the levels and graphics from the ROM; the only thing being emulated right now is the music.
As for custom content, I think he's only referring to maps (and maybe graphics). Since this is running the same data as the N64 version, it should be possible to inject a new map into the ROM and play it just like we do our custom GE missions. |

Got ya, so formats were very similar to PC version. I'd of course be far more interested in doom mods ported to N64 version... |

It should be possible (though the included example custom map's text file mentions a part of it crashing on the real thing), but heh, I can't say the same thing. If someone made a 99% faithful port of GE to the PC, I think I'd lose just about all interest in screwing around with emulators to play our stuff. Maybe once there's finally a flash cart and playing on the actual hardware becomes possible, but for now, I'd rather stick with playing them on the PC port. |

I guess Doom is a weird one since it's not a native 64 game, but I still love much better putting on backup device and playing new levels. I'd like to inquire more about their custom ability on 64. |

It's the Doom engine, but chunks of it have been reworked. The lighting system is brand new, a lot of minor changes have been made to weapon damage/balance (the chaingun is actually useful now), height is now actually factored into pressing switches, and there's a simple form of scripting, among other things. Not to mention the graphical overhaul, and much better level design, which aren't a part of the engine but did require some changes to be made to it.
SubDrag: You could try emailing Kaiser if you want. svkaiser-at-gmail.com. He's also done work with getting custom levels running on the Jaguar, PSX, and GBA versions (which all use a similar format, descending from the Jag port). GBA video:

saxman over at Sonic Retro released a converter that can dump from or insert to the 32X Doom ROM:

Not nearly as cool as Doom64, but the 32X port isn't all that bad. I suck at it because there are no strafe buttons, but the game plays fairly well. If I still owned my 32X, I'd pick up a copy for sure. I've never actually played it until now. If you check page 3, there's a hack that copies the missing levels from the Jaguar version (which this was based on). |
