i heard of this chinese n64 thing called the ique that is supposed to work even better than the original n64 - and it looks like it only uses memory cards.
not sure if it would play all games. |

I had some doubts about what i said but it is true
it is very fortunate - there are some out there -
a kind of sad story - i wanted to get one but did not trust
lik-sangs back then and having things delivered to mexico is risky.
also the tiny problem of never using credit cards.
here is a youtube video of the thing and some games running on it:

iQue is Nintendo's arm in china. There, the government imposes (at least it did back then) that foreign bussiness make a joint venture with a chinese company in order to stablish themselves in the country.
The iQue Player is a system made exclusively for the chinese market in 2003. It's BASED on N64 technology, but binaries (ROMs) are sure not to be cross compatible between N64 and iQue Player.
A number of N64 hits were ported for the system and translated to chinese.

Hacking of this system is still in very early states and, to my knowledge, there isn't that much activity in that direction.

heh, not a simple controller. it's the whole console inside the controller xD
for the few multiplayer games there was, they released a hub like link accessory xD.
it can be seen here.
http://www.videogameconsolelibrary.com/pg00-ique.htm
the first unit is the system, and the rest are just controllers.
the data chart doesn't seem correct to me though. |

Hey, that thing is pretty cool looking. Probably not too easy to get a hold of, though? And even if you could, it sounds like the game ROMs would need to be modified into another format before they can be played. _________________

the system used an electronic distribution scheme.
you would either go to a kiosk in stores to download new games into your flashcard (included with the system), or you could also upload them through usb with an PC program you can download.
The interesting thing about the program is that there are 2 "packages" of it.
one that just includes the program, and another that already has all the rom's in it's CACHE dirs. You can freely download this package from iQue's website, but don't get your hopes up just yet, because they are all encrypted and there's not much to do with them that way.
as I said, the hacking on the iQue Player is not gold yet.
even when/if it ever gets fully hacked, we don't know whether the decripted rom binaries would be of any use to a nintendo 64, or if n64 roms would run on the iQue.
given that the CPU runs faster than the standard N64, and other differences, I assume converting a game to run on the iQue is not a trivial task. it could even be impossible without access to the game's sources an a development environment...
so, really, don't get your hopes up on this. |

then the best thing is to get the flash carts i guess -
One thing that its pretty sure is that if there is more advanced hacking of this thing and "backup" ---YAaaARRRRRrrrrrrrrrrrrr matey----- technology
is in China by chinese themselves -
One hell of a language barrier -
for one little example thanks to Capitan Canada a few years back i found many games and things that where pretty much openly available to the french speaking population.
many of the hacked and "patito" stuff we see in MEx is from taiwan and china and the guy who used to get imported stuff used to tell me of many many things that don't even see the light of day here.
there is more japanese than chinese where we are ,
but i'm goint to start asking around where i see the copycat electronics and see if an "epic i-que" is even talked about.
i hope i don't end up tied up inside a dvd factory |

...I think he's talking about games and game systems from different places in the world, and how a lot of them stay in one region or another, without ever being exported to (and modified for) other countries. Like the many Japanese titles that never make it outside of Japan. But there are underground (and illegal) sources who bootleg foreign games, also allowing them to work on NTSC consoles (be them legit or knock-off). Maybe he wants to see if one of these sources he knows of would be capable of getting a hold of this "iQue" and see what all they know about it? Maybe?
I fear we are getting way off topic. Should we split this up into another thread? _________________

I support the split-up and suggest transferring it to n64 forum. |
