We need solid topic concerning video game music.
I wasn't into VGM right when I got myself in gaming.
It really started mostly from C64, Amiga500 and NES.
One of my (and many other) most favorite VGM composer is of course the legendary Chris Huelsbeck. I think he and some Japanese composers were the first professional VGM composers in the world. He has just done hundreds of unique and catchy themes on many platforms.
I remember when Turrican 2:s theme was awarded as one of the best VGM:s ever made. And it really is one of my all time favorites also. 7 minutes of awesomeness.

Besides Huelsbeck, Rob Hubbard has done the music on many early games that I loves, just because of the music in 'em.
Commando's theme has earned the cult status. Its music has been used even in the new games, remixed. Like in the new Bionic Commando Rearmed. Funny thing in this theme is that when you mastered Commando, you could actually play the game through so fast that you cant even listen the whose song, thus trying to play slower...

What comes to the Japanese VGM, it is usually superior on many fronts, just because the game making history of the country. Junko Tamiya sounds work for me, he usually worked under many aliases, Gondamin being probably the most famous. He has been composing mostly during NES era. One most recognised songs from him is probably all the music from previously mentioned Bionic Commando.

Late 80's Natsume (their probably most popular series being Harvest Moon) had probably the most dedicated composer crew. They used multiple composers just to make 8-bit chiptunes. I only know huge gaming companys like Capcom or Konami using multiple actual composers on NES games. Iku Mizutani and Koichi Yamanishi worked on Kage music. Kage was renamed in US and again renamed after Europe release.

All the good VGM around if I had to pick one company over others, not even thinking about the composers, just the music it would be probably be Sunsoft. They had all different style over others, and after playing one game from them, you would instantly recognise their other products by just listening them. On NES they had tons of games with great music. Usually those games didn't have a single bad mix. Journey to Silius was my first Sunsoft game, and I loved the music. Later that year I got my hands on Gremlins2, and man, that music blowed my mind. Almost literally. Many consider Batman (their other movie title) to contain the best sounds, but my pick would still be Gremlins2.

Of course this forum being GE/PD and Rare related, I have to mention one of their titles also. And of course Grant Kirkhope who was the composer on many N64 era titles. Like Banjo Kazooie and Perfect Dark. Every one know Graeme Norgate, so this time I will praise "this other guy". He had perfect oppotunity to create something very different when he was working on Banjo Kazooie. Chris Stamper being in Rare from the start as an artist and programmer wanted to create interactive music in Banjo Kazooie, meaning the change in the music when player did trigger something special.

There is just tons of ecxellent music around. I tried to pick only few very special tunes for me here, could go on forever. Maybe you have some sounds you enjoy? Post 'em here!

The music featured throughout the Metal Gear series has been fantastic. From simple ambience, to full-out battle tracks. The song "Calling To The Night" is beautiful, and the orchestrated MGS theme is very powerful. I also really appreciated the new themes created for MGS4.
Rare, in general, have always had great music. From Donkey Kong Country, to GoldenEye, to Banjo-Kazooie. It's constantly been fun, fresh, and funky. _________________

There are a number of music tracks within goldeneye that were never used in the missions.
One of them is the X track for Runway.
Most (all?) of them can be heard randomly in certain Multiplayer maps which don't have a track of their own.
I think there are AR/GS codes to hear them and you can also listen to them thanks to ripped USF "chiptunes".
Google about it, not hard to find. |
