Do you think the n64 would look cooler if it had a menu like the GameCube
but you can change the colors and stuff. _________________

Yes: Although they probably left it out for the reason I'm going to say no, it would just be another feature I could use to remind myself.
No: It's not really necessary, but we use emulators now so it can be anything you want. |

I don't think there's any need for a fancy menu. All it's designed to do is play games, and you do that by turning it on and off. Great simplicity is what makes it so good.
A simple message that tells you if a cartridge is inserted or not would be ok though. _________________ Pure hand-drawn goodness. |

A cartridge-based console doesn't seem like it needs a menu to me. It's the most basic principal in gaming. If there's no game, than there's no need to use the system. A gamepack storage viewer or internal clock are just extras that don't serve any great purpose. I believe that the console would lock up if a game was inserted while still powered on. Sliding it out a bit while playing can cause some serious graphical issues, as well as some clipping problems. If you plug a cable into the back of your GameShark as it is being operated, it instantly freezes. Perhaps this is a reason? Or maybe it didn't seem like it was necessary at the time. |

Its not really possible, as Wreck said, for the N64 to have a startup menu and complicated startup firmware. However, if it were possible, I would like it simply to manage the game pak, as you usually have to go through some game to do that (I remember using Mario Kart). And a clock? Why Not? If it orignally had such firmware, the Goldneye clock would probrobly be synchronized to real time, which would be cool. |
