I checked into it abit, http://defaced.co.uk/bung/porducts/dv64.htm
Thats a link to a host of the old Bung site, makers of the Doctor V64, its their price and product. No, you cant buy it off the site, Damn!
Here is another link for information regarding the Doctor V64: http://www.robwebb.clara.co.uk/backup/bung/bungv64.html
And another: http://www.erkay.de/bak_v64.htm
Makes me want to have one so badly, lol.
But Wait! Here is a place selling it! : http://www.chronicgames.net/info.asp?item=2294
.... but its the Junior version and its out of stock. (I just gave half the people reading this a heart attack)
Alright, now for the real thing. I found a guy whos trying to sell it on some forums site, problem is this was its back in 2005, so im not sure if he still has it. Nobody posted after him wanting it or anything. This link also has many pics of the device in action (very cool). Its the best version (Doctor V64 DX256)
http://www.i-club.com/forums/showthread.php?p=1109905
I ain't couging up those bucks, lol. Let Zoink or Wreck or somebody try to get it.
ADDING ON:
Here is a link to a site describing Doctor V64's rivals, which may be possible to get one of those too. http://www.geocities.com/baja/3222/backup.htm
Here is another: http://www.robwebb.clara.co.uk/backup/
(Last one is a much better list) Here is the downlaods section of that site (Web Archive link, no longer exists on current site) http://web.archive.org/web/20030104194415/http://www.robwebb.clara.co.uk/backup/files.html
Info on High Speed's SP64 (AKA: Wild Card 64) http://www.robwebb.clara.co.uk/backup/hispeed/hispeed64.html
Alright, I think im done researching. Lets post about things regarding the Doctor V64 or other backup devices in here. |

I got 3 Backup devices:
Z64
V64 CD
V64 jr 512
I just need CD64 and Supercom Partner. Infos here:
http://shiggsy.gbadev.org/section.php?s=n64
this little Backup devices are really great, and if you find one, just buy it^^
Often you can find this stuff on ebay. Prices are about:
Z64 (v1 - 128MB Ram) 120 € - 180 €
Z64 (v2 and3 - 256 MB Ram) 150 € - 250€ or higher.
V64 CD 128 MB (upgradable to 256 - HARD to find compatible memory) about 150 to 200 €
V64 CD 256MB Ram (v1 - white buttons and white connector to N64 - compatible ONLY to OLD N64 - Connector of newer ones has exactly 1 milimeter less than the original one) 200 € - 300 € or more.
V64 CD 256 MB (v2 - black buttons and black connector to N64 - compatible to ALL N64s) 220 € to 300 or above.
V64 junior 128 RARE - depends on seller. 100 - 200 €
V64 junior 256 - about 150 €
V64 Junior 512 ONLY ONE FOR +256 MB roms (Orgre Battle, Paper Mario, Conkers Bad Fur Day, Zelda OOT URA DEBUG Rom)- 100€ - 350€ or more.
CD64 - difficult: Poor Quality, many reported problems, better take V64 CD. Price. ? 100€
Remember:
The Z64 was the most expensive on open market. Today you can connect a 2,5" Hard Disk on it, so you can load roms faster and are not limited to memory, like 700 MB CD. The Z64 has an integrated Action Replay Cheat device. Normally the Z64 uses ZIP Discs (100 MB).
No need for special Safe Cards etc
This is certanly one of the best Backup devices for N64.
-----
The V64 CD Version is good in 256 MB Memory. You can play VCD Movies, load Games from CD (You can connect a DVD Reader (only few works) but it will ONLY read CD-R, so not really important.
Pay attention to the connector, otherwise, you can not connect it to your N64.
You will need a DS1 Savecard and a DX256 Savecard to be able to save most of the Games (V64 CD and junior).
NO integrated Action Replay, BUT compatible to ANY Cheat Device, just connect you Gameshark, XPloder ... in the first position:
N64 - Gameshark - SaveCards - Game
Also good, if you can get one, with all needed stuff, like save cards and a compatible N64 if v1.
VERY POOR Power Cable. (You need a PC power supply, if it burns)
-----
The Junior Versions of V64 ALL needs a PC.
You MUST upload every game trought DC25 Printer cable and the V64 will NOT save the game in Memory, when the power is switched of.
Complicated to configure for first time. But the ONLY WAY to play Games like Conkers Bad Fur Day.
Need 6 AA Batteries OR Power Supply
-----
V64 is the most popular one, but not always the easiest.
-----
If you can get a Z64, take it, if not choose V64 CD 256 or jr 512
Don't buy a CD64.
Easier is certanly a PC Emulator.

The Doctor V64 is not european or american, it is from Hong Kong (ok it was back in 1996 GB) but it was designed to run NTSC and PAL Games.
I use a Doctor V64 CD 256 MB with an NTSC US N64, and a Doctor v64 jr 512 MB with a Pal.
Z64 works also with a NTSC and PAL.
ALL these Backup stations are working fine on all regions.
You can even use NTSC Games on Pal, if you patch them with PALADIN or SPaladin. |

Here is that link in english, er, well, english site setup anyway.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=8276596245&ru=http://search.ebay.com:80/8276596245_W0QQfromZR40QQfviZ1
Holy ... umm, err. Nevermind. Really bad deal, greedy bastard's asking for thousands, really, umm, look away now..
Just kidding around, starting bid US 2 dollars and 41 cents, giving it away basically. Shipping cost is higher. I would bid for it, but I dont really have a good use for it. (Awesome gadget to have, but I can think of some people, nameley Zoinkity, who could actually use it, other than what I would do, which would just be showing it off, lol.) |

I've sent them an e-mail regarding a shipping fee to my location.
That was when I thought there was only 21 hours, not 9 days & 21 hours.
My guess is that this is probably going to go pretty high.
Nekojin, would you say that the Z64 could play modified game ROMs? |

I haven't tested it myself, but you can find Z64 Game Patches on dextrose.com so I am pretty sure it works.
Remember that you need eighter a ZIP Reader on your PC or you have to mod a 2,5" HDD to it. |

I've been trying to get ahold of one for years, but htey're just too far out of my price range. I can't even afford a telephone at the moment.
Oh, incidentally, Citadel does NOT work on a backup device. Without access to one, I'll probably never get it to load either.
They do play modified game ROMs, assuming:
1: the rom header is okay
2: you have a cartridge that uses the same bootcode as the rom you intend to play. So, for GE, that's pretty much anything.
Also, you can upload saveram to most backup devices, assuming it is formatted correctly. _________________ (\_/) Beware

Hm..
strange.
When I play it on V64 jr, I can select it in Multiplayer, but when it loads, you hear the music for a few seconds, then it hangs.
Tested on Pal
Could you possibily fix the rom header, so that it would run?
Or can I do this myself? |
