I think the hardest game I ever beat without cheating or using savestates was Battletoads for the original NES (which was IMO another masterpiece from rare). Quite a few years back I beat it on the original NES hardware.

I did beat NES Battletoads too, way back.
I just don't remember if I used the warps or not.
Without warps I at least got myself to the last level, if not completed the game. Last level was level 12 yes? The rotating tower.
Battletoads sure is probably one of the hardest games ever made.
I bet nowadays I would not even get through the first tunnel on level 3. Very Happy

Double Dragon 3: The Sacred Stones is another superhard game on NES that I played through. And Dragons Lair. Man it took years to play it through, even it has only 4 short levels in it.

Man... NES games are so tough.
Very Happy

Most C64 games are quite tough also. I remember beating Miami Vice on C64, it was terrible experience, but I did it. Also the legendary "Bruce Lee" was quite a challenge.

One of the toughest games on N64 is definetly Blast Corps, if you try to beat it 100%, getting platinum medals on every stage. I remember that N64 magazine said in some issue, that it would be impossible. By that time I had already played it through 100%. Smile Smile They wrote that if anyone can beat it 100% and send a picture, they will give the player a reward. Never did send any pic, 'cause probably thousands real players had accomplished this already.

New games always require something else to make them more hard.
I played Crysis through on Delta difficulty using throwable objects (mostly pillow) only. It is so funny to kill enemies using pillow as an weapon.
Laughing Laughing Laughing

Playing PD through on Perfect Agent was quite hard too. War!! was always tough level for me, always ran out of ammo.

Thinking back I can't remember if I used the warps to beat it or not either - I do know I've beat each level individually.

The Inferno level was probably the hardest level in the whole game and it was possible to warp past it - it made the turbo tunnel seem like childs' play. The final section of the rat race was a pain too.

btw - I can't even imagine trying to beat this game with 2 players.

You know... this is a REALLY hard question. I'm not sure if I can answer it. But it probably would be Donkey Kong 64. Holy sh**. I've had the game for 10 years and I'm at around 90%.

Thats not bad, battletoads is ranked among the hardest games of all time. My neighbor owned it and I remember playing co op and never getting past the second level, Lol..

Hardest game I ever beat w/out cheats was probably a game called Super Widget for the SNES. When you run out of lives you go clear back to the first level. There are codes for various levels, but I never bothered to write em down..

Honestly I can't tell... I played through many different games, most being utterly difficult.... Battletoads in Battlemaniacs (SNES) was suepr difficult but had kick ass music. (Damn you Turbo Tunnel.)

Among 2D platformers, Super Mario The Lost Levels was challenging, not to mention A-1 > D-4 levels... Donkey Kong Country 2 was also a b!tch. D:

In terms of FPS, I played so many different games... Whoah I cannot tell...

A Sonic H. game called Sonic Epoch. It was done through a site called S.A.G.E I believe. Sonic Amateur Gamers Expo.

I haven't played a great deal of fangames but this one based off the Saturday T.V. show felt perfect in its own way.

It was hard, had a believable story, and fun. I didn't cheat. The game had a bug that set you back levels if you tried to escape. It meant you had to complete a level to save. No in between, I guess that's a good thing.

I'm only going to say "Glover" for the N64 because I have neglected so many games, and most were never fully completed.

To prove my statement with trying not to contradict myself: Glover was a really SIMPLE game if you weren't trying to complete the Bonus levels.

I am only mentioning this game because this is really the ONLY game I have completed 100%. With the exception of Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards, because that game is simple even for a Minecraft Player.

Well I probably have to say Goldeneye on Secret Agent mode. Most other games that I play all the way through I have to use walkthroughs, which isnt cheating technically but whatever. Games beaten with walkthroughs include Zelda: OOT and MM, Wild ARMs, Chrono Trigger, and FF7. And I tried to minimize my walkthrough use on Chrono Trigger so that would probably be the hardest for me.

Dragon Warrior.
Yes, the most inane RPG ever coded.
Finished.
No cheats.
No codes.
No exploits.
No running.

For this reason I now hack the snot out of every game I play. Brutally. Utterly. I deserve it. Do you?
