I'm going to order for the sake of testing them out. I've seen a few different ones actually. Based on Amazon review, people like it. Not sure about the others. I'm a bit skeptical of third party parts. I'm curious if anyone has bothered doing a stick replacement. |

I've heard of people replacing N64 ones with GC ones, but have never considered doing it myself. I guess if my sticks wore down I'd just buy another controller. |

Interesting. Of the two or three ones I've seen, the guy in the youtube video mentioned the stick being more like the GC one. I'm glad they mentioned it's shorter, not official N64 controller size. I'll opt for the other model for now. I have a couple custom painted controllers that need a new stick. I have to be using the expensive ones! |

Ollllo here:
A complete waste of time replacing them with gamecube ones, since the blasted things are made of plastic too, i have 3 gamecube controllers laying around because they are not good enough to control some games anymore.
they do have a bit more sensitivity , but that in & of itself is a problem

Some 3rd party controllers had metal parts & sometimes i would plug in
some "el cheapo" controller sticks to the Oficial N64 controllers & they would work -
WARNING - doing this some-how messes up something & the hybrids would not work with the adaptoid

Buying a new controller, heh, are there any left?
We're bound to run out soon, or is someone making more
Trev
P.S. I suppose all you need to replace is the yolks, the spring isnt really the cause of slackness (I remember people told me to stiffen the spring)
The gears dont seem to wear and the stick itself (mine anyway) seems ok.
Its just the yolks in both mine that are thinner (bigger gap) in the middle... _________________

Sadly not that I've seen. They did a few years ago sell the grey controller. Sadly no more. Lame! |

300$!?
That's a bit over price for a N64 controller if I do say so for my self.
I mean I understand for 60$ to 100$ for one. but 300$ is ridicules for a controller. _________________ There totally nothing to read here. |

An update. Okay I was thrown off a bit by a couple things. It appeared that there were 2 different 3rd party replacement sticks. This is false. It appears that there is only one, and it's shorter and described as being like the GameCube thumbstick.
There is only one real reason I know this. It's because I read the customer reviews on Amazon.com. One guy said don't be fooled by the picture, that you need to check the other photos to see the actual photo. Get it? The main photo being shown is.... yes, the original N64 thumbstick and not the one that is being purchased. That's a sham. So upon reader further, and understand this POS is rated about 4.5 out of 5 stars, you can see that the players who know, say it's not good, it doesn't work like the original, the sensitivity is off, the deadzone is off, etc, etc. In other words, people leaving good reviews most likely don't know much about the subject or haven't used the replacement on enough games. Some games like Mario Party which require circular motion don't even work! Some moves in Zelda can't be performed. What a joke.
Okay, so that was a bit depressing to realize. However, I dug around some YouTube videos regarding fixing existing controller thumbsticks. This is where the hope is. I'm sure we've talked about it before. The fact is I'm a believer that your worn out stick can be brought back to its former self. I'll post up the vid. There are a few various videos, but one is brilliant.

That's cool thanks for posting your video.
I really took to heart some of the Amazon comments about these. Comments were about what you noticed regarding the "over the top" sensitivity. There is a move in Zelda that you simply can't do with the 3rd party stick. Another guy posted about dead zone and that in ssb, you can't pull of moves because the stick doesn't coordinate with the buttons. I think another comment about a mario party game and the rotation not working properly.
I suppose with this said, it comes down to whether there is a few different 3rd party replacement sticks or not. If it's shorter, feels like a GC stick, then I suppose we're all talking about the same thing.
I will say I've never tried one so impossible for me to say. Believe me I'd like to believe that there is such a replacement out there that is without fault.
I'm buying plumbers tape and I'm repairing the original part. Good or bad, I'll report back. Sounds like you've done most of this before so perhaps shed some light on your findings or what you tried. Cheers. |

Olllo here :
Don't even bother with the tape, it will wear out in less than 15 days,
and sometimes the stick will get stuck
especially if you play mario kart Ge or Smash Bros.
Another warning
Sometimes just by tampering with the insides of the thumbsticks something messes up the sensors-
never found out what it was , but since i had quite a bunch i just replaced one sensor chipset with another.
If you take your N64 controller apart - make sure you place the screws exactly where they where -
Screws from other locations slowly but surely wear out the plastic.
be very careful , because mistakes do happen, disconnecting the thumbstick is a bit risky because you can break a wire-
Your best bet is the replacement thumbsticks.
I tried to revitalize the plastic , rebuild it Etc and the results never lasted for long- always 2 months tops
the replacements should last you about a year
5 months if you play too much 4 player mario kart or smash bros

Oolloo here
Another warning -
If you ever try doing a metallic replacement -
there is something about it that could damage the n64 forever....
metal dust.
the wrong combination of metals can produce more or less.
I have a fear that the metalllic dust will short circuit the small sensor chipset and that damage might extend to the n64 itself -
back some years ago, the common home-repair for Snes buttons that wore out was to stick pieces of aluminum in the contollers-
I found out the hard way that aluminum bits is a bad idea,
some bits short circuited the controller & that short circuit ended up messing player 2's controller port all the way to the snes chipset.
from then on no controller worked fine on the thing, B & A buttons would pause the game as if the aluminum bits where still there...

My question is whether you used the plumbers tape. |
