 |
|
Hey all, I'm new to the site!
I know it has been talked to death but I could really use some help....
Plain and simple - I keep getting a "Comms Timeout" error when I try to upload the Citadel.bin file to my GameShark and I can't figure out why and I could really appreciate if someone could give me some advice.
Everything else is working fine. I've turn on the Citadel codes, the Code Generator ON, my Parallel Port Cable works, I'm running Windows XP on an IBM ThinkPad E600 that has the parallel port, GSCC works fine, GSCC recognizes the GameShark, and last but not least GSCC can even upload and download codes to/from the GameShark completely fine!!!
The only problem is that every time I try to upload the Citadel.bin file.... I get the "Comms Timeout" error!
I've tried unplugging and and retrying like 100 times and still nothing so I'm assuming it has something to do with my computer. Is it something with my computer or operating system?
I would seriously appreciate some help on this even though everyone is probably sick of talking about it. I'm a huge fan of GoldenEye since my Dad bought me the game when I was 10 and I really want to play Citadel on my console!
Thanks a lot!

Sorry, didn't notice the thread here...
The issue is simply this: every version of Windows since 2000 has had issues with comms support. Not only do they force you to go through a driver, but it will still randomly cut off the I/O sporadically. This also affects printers I might add.
It's not a bug either, but a feature. Apparently this was coded in to avoid some crazy exploit somebody came up with to grab PC control. The larger the chunk of data being sent or recieved the more likely it is to randomly fail.
I picked up an old win3.1 laptop just to avoid this issue.
Anyway, it should (after about a million tries) work if you follow the instructions. _________________ (\_/) Beware

Thanks Zoinkity!
I kept trying but no luck on this old laptop. I really appreciate the advice and response, I'll still keep trying. Luckily my gma was getting rid of her old Dell Desktop that had a parallel port on the back and it was running XP, so I tried it out and it worked on the first try!
But again, I'll keep trying the laptop as I want to be able to take this game over to friends houses.
Thanks for everything! |
