Ok, for a gaming leftie the control system of the N64 doesn't have much leeway. The controller is a solid board so I can't switch the buttons around, and frequently I find that it's just better to have two sticks as I've become accustomed to a PS controller.
Option 1: Can we do it technically?
Ans: No - there's no room in the controller and there are only buttons on the board which means it's a binary state regardless of what you do.
Option 2: Can we do a flip?
Ans: Dunno...I'm a rocket scientist not a mechanic!
Option 3: Can we do it mechanically?
Ans: Yes! And many people have! Except it requires conjoining two controllers together, and using two slots on the console - not so cool when you've got friends around.
Option 4: Can we munge it?
Ans: Yes! So if I replace the D-Pad with a pseudo-stick, it'll still be binary data, with 8 degrees of freedom...but it might do the trick...
So one new main stick, and one disposable controller (that required the old screws being drilled out because they were all so shoddy). Dismantled the prior (stuffed) joystick and whittled it down to a shaft, then drilled the appropriate hole in the D-Pad...I think you can see where this is going...
The pieces (broken or modified) are being glued together overnight at the moment. I shall test it and report back tomorrow!
P.S. Am also knocking up doing a paint job on it...why? Why not! _________________ No Mr. Bond, I expect you to be re-coded! |

Several controllers like that were already made. The Alpha 64 had two sticks and a switch to swap sides. Also, I had a sinister friend that happened to buy a left-handed 3rd party controller in horrible gaudy gold.
Probably not as common on Ebay as the more traditional ones, but you can find them off and on. Would save teh trouble of modification. _________________ (\_/) Beware

Well it actually worked a charm! And modifying something is usually half of the fun in my eyes. The next challenge would be getting the D-Pad into place on the right C-Buttons so that I could actually have a truly left-handed controller but I don't think I'm that eager to ruin something that works.
I've had some real let-downs with buying 3rd party equipment for the N64 so usually refrain from doing it, the new control-stick that I decided to try is actually quite plesant to use although its sensitivity is much higher than what I'm use to and I've a feeling that could be because my gear is getting a little shot.
Still, experiment over, it was a lot of fun! _________________ No Mr. Bond, I expect you to be re-coded! |
