It shouldn't have been number 1. Doom should have or Wolfenstein. Without them, FPS's wouldn't be how they are today. |

Those games for sure are the grand daddy's of FPS games. I'm a big fan of Wolf 3D, but GoldenEye is my preferred of the 2. with GE it seems like they just took it to the next level.
Having said that, without the Dooms, Wolfs, Duke Nukems, Hexxen etc, there would probably be no GE/PD or many of the newer games. They did pave the way for the FPS genre. _________________ www.YouTube.com/hab007GE |

I feel PD really should have been number 1. It is goldeneye on roids, but it's popularity has always been lacking. _________________ Twitch

I agree with GoldenEye up top. FPS on console was unheard of until then, and everyone thought it was always poor. Also, everyone spent their younger years playing 4P GoldenEye. For some reason, PD we never did as much. |

I'm rather surprised Unreal didn't make out. It was a bit derivative I suppose, although the engine itself is the big prize. Still massively influential.
Interestingly, GE's influence came from rail-shooters, eventually amended with an exploratory aspect. It owes very little to its genera.
GE had a unique place, being the first console shooter anyone really cared about--SNES Doom is the cart of choice to turn into StarFox2. Many people don't remember Sega's Zero Tolerance for instance, and it didn't do well enough for its sequel to be released, despite it being a pretty darn good game for the time.
PD wouldn't have been concidered if GE hadn't hit it as big as it did, and ditto for Timesplitters onward. They built directly (both figuratively and literally) on the foundation of GE. Console shooters in general have followed GE's gameplay model closer than their PC counterparts. There's different concerns.
Even with something as simple as control design the PC favors precise aiming over precise movement, in opposition to the console model of precise movement over direct aim control. Simple intuitive controls take presidence over strict 1-key-per-function keyboard models, and many console games have a basic 2-3 button approach originally featured in GE and automation whenever possible.
Biggest factor though is that they keep paying Hollis to go to conventions and talk about how the game was designed, how a loose leash led to a better product, how gameplay trumps realism, etc. It's studied and taught. _________________ (\_/) Beware
