This may be known by some others, but I just found out about it today...
Those who have messed around with the GoldenEditor may have noticed before (or maybe read others talking about) that there is a large section of the Streets map that is constructed out of props. Since these are objects, they react as such. They have no collisions turned on, so characters are free to walk through them. The clipping tiles are built to fit within the arranged buildings. You can't blow them up, as they are invincible.
Alright, Wreck. Just what are you getting at?
Ever tried firing a weapon with penetrating capability at a soldier or civilian through one of these prop buildings? It actually hits them. You can blow up the landmines from safely behind a wall. The higher the gun's penetrating power, the more sections of buildings you can fire through.
Pretty wild how little things like this have remained quiet for nearly 20 years. |

Nothing to do with using the editor as I am strictly a player of just the console but one thing that I find funny to do on the Streets level (and it has to be on 00Agent so their strength is higher) is shoot one of the civilians and then zoom in at them, close up, with your aim on the AK47 and they do a funny little dance thing where they take a few steps forward with their arms raised. Like a shuffle.
Can't explain it better than that, you'll either know what I mean or not. I've never seen any other characters do that - like scientists, or other people that raise their hands |

Does anybody know have any theories as to why Streets was constructed mostly with props instead of with bg data? Seems like such an odd design choice. |

@BMW
Probably to reduce load times? Since props can be loaded after the level is done loading. And you don't need to load the whole level as a mesh, just repeat the props when needed.
Or to create detail LOD models, if GE even used them, as Streets is a pretty big, open level.. I also think it could of been due to level space issues? _________________ This is a signature, why did you read this? |

Apparently Streets was to be dynamic with the route changing randomly per load.
They had a problem with Stans though as they were static, and to top it, the street segments didnt bound the players and AI so they couldnt just use 1 giant stan tile.
I do like the idea of LLOD though, I wounder if there is a LLOD model per building, ill have to check, if not ill definatly make some for testing performance with more detail up close
Trev
Edit:
Each room did not have LLOD in GE, however I have now created 1/4 count LLOD models that transition almost seamlessly.

Sounds pretty cool, Trev.
Maybe with an expanded Rom, and 8 MB use, more model LODs could be added? Freeing up some of the game's frame-rate issues. _________________ This is a signature, why did you read this? |
