That texture effect from 64DD boot menu

How do you think it is done ?
I tought of a greyscale/alpha for the texture, placed on top of an envmap. But don't think it is done like that.
Would love to hear your point of view, maybe one of you even know...

I looked into this a few months ago and my conclusion is that it's a similar effect than the Backlash in Blast Corps.

Like the creator says, it's an animated texture that changes depending of the relative angle of the object against the camera. If you pay attention you can see how the texture changes if the vehicle rotates slowly.

Since the 64DD menu screen has a fixed camera you can control exactly how the texture transition should be made. Also, it seems it's not an instant change like in one frame you are displaying one texture and the next frame you change to another, but rather there's a fade off transition between textures as seen later in that video when it transitions to the Egyptian hieroglyphics.

I don't think we can recreate that effect in GE/PD.

Thanks Sogun, very interesting. I think Blast Corps was the only video I didn't see for Rare Replay.
I never realised that effect on the texture, it's actually quite impressive.
