There's been much ado about the difference in the audio between different versions of Super Mario 64. I went ahead and recorded each version--including the disk system--from console with the same settings (well, really all in a row).

There basically isn't much difference in the waveforms, but that should be expected since the samples aren't changing. One noticable difference though is the volume.
In particular, comparing the 64DD and J1.0 version, the 64DD is basically blaring all audio at the same volume all the time. If you look at the dB it's basically a straight line. There is a minor, growing desync between the two as well, which is also to be expected. The 64DD can't read audio from the disk on-demand, so all audio needs to be loaded into rdram before playing it. Cart desyncs slightly every time it reads the next chunk of data from cart.
At any rate, this should at least remove the conjecture from the argument. _________________ (\_/) Beware
