Hey what's up my fellow Perfect Dark fans! Smile

I'm not well known around here but have been around here for years since the gameshark days. Very rarely am I here these days. Anyway I posted this to our PD fanclub on deviantART: https://perfect-dark-fanclub.deviantart.com/journal/Perfect-Dark-and-GoldenEye-music-in-Crisp-Quality-706946925

If anyone would like to join us they're more than welcome to, we usually share secrets and post PD themed artworks and work at being the first to share something before anyone else. Great community! Wink

Recently stumbled upon a YouTuber earlier who shared Perfect Dark and Goldeneye music in CD Quality, Myself thinking it would just be simply higher quality versions of their soundtracks.. I was wrong, they sounded so crisp and clear, almost different...almost like a remaster..yet completely the same with better quality according to his description it's the music how it originally was intended to sound and the that the N64's hardware compressed it thus ruining the higher sounds..This is the first time I've ever heard it all sound so clear..may even sound more crisp than the XBLA version..I'm uncertain..that version may not be compressed much. Goldeneye sounds great too, I compared his versions to others..and I did hear much greater sound quality.

This is what he says: Music samples on Nintendo 64 are downsampled heavily (often to 11,025 Hz) and then compressed via ADPCM. This produces muddy-sounding music with heavy distortions in the high range.
These recordings are uncompressed, providing the crisp and clear sound of the original game music. These are not remixes.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

If what he says is true and these aren't remixes then that's incredible! Very Happy
I wonder how he was able to record and preserve Perfect Dark and GoldenEye's sound since it's already compressed within the games. Because some of these sound even more clear than on Grant Kirkhope's official site or anywhere really..extracting them they'd still be compressed wouldn't they? Wouldn't the damage already be done from compression originally?

This is so strange, I took a listen to the 'Credits' soundtrack of PD and I swear I've never heard that before, especially that solo at 6:00 in the video. Track sounds completely different.

I agree, as the hardcore PD fan I am.. I don't recognize that at all either. Same for Bunker 1 in Goldeneye of that same Youtube channel, sounds completely alien to me. Sounds like a slight remix.
Well there are two different channels, the first one seems more how I remember it, yet still different: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gz5CBrFIhRg
Even still, I don't know if what the first youtuber is saying is true about this being the original sound quality and how n64 compression distorted higher pitch sound, could be true..it just sounds almost too good.. man that guitar solo does sound amazing though!

For instance, Mission Impossible 64 quality was believed to be distorted between N64 and PS1, tracks were slightly different between systems.

I thought they tried to find the original sound effects, and used that instead, with the midi. So they may not sound exactly the same because different instruments?

I'm thinking you may be right Subdrag.. Unsure..

My guess is there may be higher quality PD and GE songs out there somewhere locked away by Rare.. They likely went with LQ at the time for the 64's sake? Hard saying.

I'm not sure. I took a listen to the version of Credits that we hear at the end of PD on YT and it is, for sure, different than that uncompressed (cd?) version, with changes in instruments used and that solo that I pointed out omitted.

Grant Kirkhope has an excellent ear for soundtracks, blows me away.

Let me see real quick...Ah yes. I am noticing it now they are missing, you're right. Plus I don't hear that oooohhh background sound effect in the CD version like the original. Good job catching it acceptable67, I suspected they may be remix's and not originals. Needed others input to clarify..or catch what I couldn't. Because he never did answer me on how he would have recorded or extracted the original unaltered sound to begin with considering most roms would already have the N64 muddy compression as he calls it, there's no way unless he worked for Rare, maybe. Surprised he doesn't just call them (Remasters) then since they likely aren't the real deal... that'd even get him more subscribers.

That he does! Wish he made more game ost's like this nowadays.. every person that I've introduced PD to always remembered it for the music, or would hum it later without realizing it lol. It does get in your head, very catchy.

The first youtube channel link you posted was given to us here by a user named L. Spiro. It's his channel. Suuposedly he got the original instrument samples uncompresse. We don't know how he got them or what is connection was to anybody from Rare but whatever he is for some undiscloed reason he won't tell anybody. He also says he can't distribute the samples out. However, now with reading what you said in one of your posts I am beginning to think he was full of crap and just conned us so that we could just subscribe to his youtube channel.

The PD credits track sounds like the one on Grant Kirkhop’s website, just made to loop.
