The rom for a pre-beta Zelda on the n64 has been discovered. The game is grey points pixelz.

The rom was found by Jac6.

Not sure what you mean. That ROM plays fine for me, it's the MQ from GC.

Technically MQ required a small hack to work on an N64 again. It was never originally designed as a standalone game though. MQ always was targetted at the 64DD.
The game works fine on both backup devices and most other emulators. It's been in the rdb for a while now. Try PJ64 with the standard plugin. It should play just fine.

The story goes that originally OoT was to be a standalone 64DD game, vastly larger and broader in scope than either N64 game, and some contend even moreso than their newest title. In its original form they'd keep track of every last blasted thing you do and when you did it - every smashed pot, collected rupee, it was all tracked. Plus, there's a good deal of plot that was cut from the 64dd days.

Eventually they scaled the project back into what we now know as OoT, but MQ was to be a sort of expansion pak. You'd put the MQ disk into the 64DD with your N64 cart on top, and it would change some of the stuff around. For the GC release they simply applied the patches to a good N64 image, then played it right through the same emulator code.

The GC emu has a few slight problems, most notable the endless room buffer effect doesn't work, but it does a good job. People have replaced the Zelda N64 roms with other N64 carts and burnt them to disk to effectively port them to GC. Kinda neat really.
