Are you sure, that no one from US have visited Canada, and then came back with those Canadian dollars?
Sorry if I got it wrong, I'm from very different part of this globe...

I generally carry only American dollars in the US. Even though I know most stores accept both currencies, I don't like doing conversions. |

It's pretty annoying, I agree. I live in Detroit, Michigan, and I deal with that problem once a month. The only thing I can do is... not like it. That solution doesn't solve the problem, and it'll never be solved.
What the US should do for the states that border Canada is make it so that US stores can exchange their Canadian coins for their equalent value in US dollars. Doing so would help damper the Canadian coin circulation the US considerably.
Another solution would be that the Canadian government should covert Canadian money over the US dollars, permanently. That'd work even better than the other idea. Canadians visit the US all the time, and the cultural differences are minute. It's like Canada is, more or less, America's 52nd state (after Puerto Rico, the 51st state). My friend went on a business trip to Alberta a month ago, and he said that it did not feel as if he was in a foreign country. Economic-wise, Canada is also a major trader with the US. Then there's that long, long, long, long list of Canadians who became successful in the US. Due to these close relations, close proximity, and frequent business, this proposition would be ideal. And it's been proven to work fine, at least for 8 years now, as the European Union executed this move for Euro, under the similar circumstances. |

Sounds to me like it isn't a problem with our money, but certain places of business on your side. I get American coins all the time when receiving my change. No one has ever looked closely at the coins I hand to them to make sure it is all Canadian, either. Our currency is nearly even nowadays, so there's no excuse for any person to refuse money on either side of the border. Bills, I can understand moreso. But coins, that's just being silly. _________________
