Hey if any of you still have the original Xbox laying around collecting dust, its time to resurrect it! MS has abandoned it sadly, but there is still hope. Softmodding it is almost exactly the same as hardmodding (using a modchip) except you don't open your Xbox(unless you wanna upgrade your HDD) and it uses software exploits from certain gamesaves to install the softmod through Linux. I'm gonna post the link to the tutorial I used to install the softmod. It is for installing Xbox Media Center, although that is just an app you can install if you choose to. What we want first is to install the softmod.

Tutorial:http://lifehacker.com/software/geek-to-live/transform-your-classic-xbox-into-a-killer-media-center-299809.php

What you need is:
* An original Xbox
* A copy of either Splinter Cell, MechAssault(not Platinum Hits), or 007: Agent Under Fire
* An Action Replay to transfer the mod from a memory card to the Xbox OR alternatively you could make your own adapter like I did and save the money.
For more info: http://www.fury-tech.com/en/Guides/Xbox-Controller-PC-Conversion-Mod
* A PC connected to a network router where the Xbox is also connected, to FTP files from and to Xbox(apps/games/emulators).

The way I did the adapter was with an extra controller extension cord and a USB cable(male on both ends, NOT a USB adapter used for mp3s with the smaller end). I cut the controller extension like in the tutorial above, and the usb cable as well, then exposed the colored wires, exposed the copper wires and with electrical tape I taped them together. It may seem very flimsy but it worked for me and it saves you the money from the Action Replay(which I bought to my regret).

You also need an Xbox memory card. What you do is follow the tutorial, download the xbox controller driver, and the Action Replay software from the website, then connect the controller to the PC with the memory card in it, and then when your PC is detecting the memory card/reader select the driver from the Action Replay Program Files/drivers/ folder. Fire up AR and drag the softmod saves(below) into the PC database, and then to the Memory Card.

I'll link the softmod I used, there are many out there but this one is by far the best since it backs up everything for you and installs the two best dashboards(Evolution-X and UnleashX). UnleashX is better, but you should have EvoX as an app(I'll get into that later).

Ok so after you copy your softmod saves to the memory card, copy the save to the Xbox HDD and then load up the game and depending on the game the way to run the softmod varies. In the softmod manual it tells you what to do. Then you install the softmod. Backup your MS Dash and EEPRom, and I recommend installing it in Single Boot Standard mode. I also recommend UnleashX since it has more features than EvoX but EvoX is good to have as an app. I'll be posting good apps and emulators, and also links to how to backup your Xbox games and play them on HDD or DVD-Rs.

Follow the tutorial to FTP from and to your xbox, I recommend getting FlashFXP.

Yes, it's fantastic! Everyone should do it really. You could likely even buy a used xbox and convert it into a media center and would cost you less than a simple basic dvd player! Sad but true! I've converted mine, and use it basically only for mame emulation, but the biggie is the media center and recording, playing whatever type of media format that exists today.

Sounds really cool! But I don't want to do it though because I am afraid that I'll mess up my xbox, is this perfectly safe?

It is safe if you do it right. You could mess up your xbox although if you make a backup of your eeprom and ms dash then not all is lost.

It's easy if you just know what you're dealing with and what can go wrong. You shouldn't mess up I haven't seen cases where people have messed it up but I'm sure there are.

Well you need the softmod installed to either have FTP access to ur xbox(acces from ur PC) or to have the XBCopy program that copies a game disk to ur HDD. Note that the stock hard drive is only 8GB so you can't fit that many games since you need space for saves and other stuff too. I upgraded mine to 320 gb(not too hard) and I have like 30 games on it and programs, music and its not even halfway full.
