Yes, that's right. My Xbox 360 has contracted the infamous Red Ring Of Death.
Here's my story:
I purchased my 360 on eBay last June. I used eBay because the Core console (the one without the hard drive, and with a wired controller) had been discontinued by then, and eBay was the only place I could find it in new or refurbished condition (don't ask why I wanted a Core console...)
The seller claimed that it was "manufacturer refubished". When I got it, nothing in the box indicated that it had come from Microsoft, and it contained a slip with a suspicious phone number that said it only had a 60 warranty. Unfortunately, I didn't do anything about this. I gave the seller positive feedback, only giving a slight mention to the short warranty.
When I initially recieved the 360, I tested it for about an hour to make sure it worked properly. I then packaged it up and put it in my closet until my next birthday (which was a couple of days ago). Please don't ask why I did this, for the same reason I don't want you asking about why I wanted a Core console.
When I started it up again on my birthday (my 20th, BTW... ), it ran perfectly for about 2 and 1/2 hours before it RROD'd. I was able to activate a 12 + 1 month XBL subscription just before it happened, which has irritated me even further, since it's ticking down as I type this, and I can't use it.
All in all, I think it ran properly for only less than 4 hours total. The only actual gaming that I was able to do was 10 - 15 minutes of ES IV: Oblivion back in June of '08.
Here comes the worst part. So far, I have been unable to get Microsoft to take it in for repair (free or paid) because the console's serial number has already been registered. I have no record of ever having registered it with any of my email accounts, which can only mean that the Xbox is used, and was not refurbished by Microsoft. I'm not even sure if it had been refurbished at all at this point. Maybe somebody just gave it the towel trick and passed it off as having been fixed by MS.
I'm still waiting on another email reply from MS, but I'm not getting my hopes up. If I can't get through on the proper channels, I'm gong to contact the seller and ask for the console's history. If that doesn't help, I'm going to contact a different division of Microsoft. If they just send me back to the useless Xbox customer support, I'm going to send the 360 directly to Microsoft headquarters along with a very heartfelt letter. If they just send it back and tell me to buy a new, retail Xbox 360, I'm going to give up and try some temperature shifting tricks of the damn thing to see if I can make the bad solder joins (which is now known to be the main cause of the RROD) to click back into place. _________________ Pure hand-drawn goodness. |

I've decided to perform a proper fix on the system.
I forgot to buy a necessary screwdriver the other day, so I'm getting it today.
Wish me luck! _________________ Pure hand-drawn goodness. |

Hopefully you'll be able to fix this issue on your own. My brother's PS3 won't read any discs anymore after an official update from Sony screwed it up. This isn't uncommon, either. Unfortunately, Sony won't take any responsibility for it, even though it was their fault entirely. The only thing they'll do, is fix - or replace - the optical drive for $200 USD. On a system that already cost nearly $400 CAD. Isn't Sony wonderful? _________________

Agh!
It turns out that it was repaired, but whoever did it did a bad job, using springs and plastic stickers, and a different (smaller, I think) heatsink that's incompatible with the screws I bought!
I don't think the fix is going to work properly if I use different screws, so I have to go on the internet and buy an original heatsink!

So was it repaired by the company or by a previous owner? It'd be f'd up if Microsoft was fixing its own consoles that way _________________ "Inspiration strikes but once.. If you're forgetful, carry a pen." -Me |

Ok did you figure out that your Xbox cooling system was a Xenon (which is the WORST BY FAR), a Falcon (maybe the best), or a Jasper (maybe rumored but definitley the best. _________________ An Elevator from Earth; then to the Heavens...

It was a Xenon. I fixed the RROD for about 8 days, but it came back with an unfixable error code.
It turns out that there's a section in the warranty that prevents the registration from changing hands. So I had to buy a new one. I voided the warranty by fixing it myself anyways
I looked around for a Jasper, but no such luck, so I got a Falcon. It's been working for a few weeks so far. _________________ Pure hand-drawn goodness. |
