Question in topic: I'm thinking of getting Half-Life 2 just because of this.
Which will probably lead to me playing Half-Life. |

You're inviting some conflict with that thread title
Not played HL2 myself but Half Life 1 was awesome and I would suggest getting that first if you haven't played it. _________________ Join The Goldeneyeonline / Shootersforver IRC Chat Channel! - #goldeneyeonline @ Quakenet |

We actually already have Half Life 1 at our house, but I haven't played a PC game since... Pitfall? |

I know a few people here who play, but they must disclose their identities themselves.
As for myself, i haven't been able to break my addiction since release day.
I'll probably use a similar texture style for the GE version (which that is a direct port of, omitting the textures and entities) |

Ignoring GoldenEye: Source for a moment, I'd suggest you pick up the Orange Box for Half-Life 2 and its episodes alone. If you have Steam installed, you can also get HL2 Deathmatch for free if you have a video card. Seriously, there's a page for nVidia and a page for ATI:
http://steampowered.com/nvidia/
http://www.steampowered.com/ati_offer1a/
(Just learned about those myself)
Half-Life 2 tells a good story, and takes itself more seriously than the original game. The original is a classic now, but playing them back to back and tuning out nostalgia, I definitely think HL2 plays better. So yeah, it's worth the price for the actual game alone, and I suggest the Orange Box since it'll get you the two episodes (expansions, basically, with dumb names that throw you off if you don't know that), Portal, and Team Fortress 2 for $10 more than buying HL2 by itself.
Now, about GoldenEye: Source. I had been wanting to give it a try for a while, but I figured that with my hardware, I just wouldn't be able to have fun online, even if I could run the Orange Box engine reasonably well. Now that I did an upgrade, though, that's not an issue, and I've been playing it for a few days now. They duplicated some things surprisingly well, such as explosions, but other things aren't very good. Projectile weapons are particularly awful, worse than GE, and worse than HL2 strangely. I'm not too fond of aiming mode, since it's basically a walk mode with a crosshair painted on the center of the screen. Weapons with a zoom work, but the sniper rifle can't be adjusted.
I always try to play on the "Classic" maps because the others, with the exception of Complex and Egyptian, are just way too cluttered with junk. They felt the need to add fake doors everywhere, so expect to get shot in the back a few times trying to open them, not knowing any better. Not enough of the props are interactive, compared to the original. If they didn't want to make everything explode, they should've at least made them breakable. I also don't like what they did with the glass, they tried to replicate the look of the original, but I prefer the stock HL2 glass. The GE:S glass is nearly impossible to see through, for one thing.
The lack of single player also bothers me, and personally I think the game would've been closer to the original if they had focused on that first, rather than multi. Maybe I'm just biased because of the ridiculous amount of multi-only mods out there, but I don't think I'm being unreasonable. The only servers regularly available have some pretty bad weapon sets and game modes set up, too, which bugs me, but I guess I could always host my own. Don't get me wrong, it can still be fun (I would've given up on it on day one if it wasn't), but it's nowhere near as fun as the original. If the team fixes throwing physics and rethinks a few additions to the maps (especially all of the useless clutter), I think I'll like it a lot more. It's certainly the best of the GE clones out there, though. |

I have The Orange Box and Left 4 Dead.
I'm just pissed off at Steam for when I got Counter-Strike: Source brand new for Christmas, only to find out that someone got the CD-key already using a CD-key generator, and so I couldn't play it (or either of the two games that came with it). I contacted Steam support and did everything they said, but then they said "oh here, just have the hacker's account" and gave me the hacker/cd-key generator's account instead of giving me MY games. Sure I could, hypothetically speaking, play on the hacker's account, but I already have an account, and I couldn't play with my friends, and it won't be my stats, and it isn't my account. So **** you Valve. |

An addendum to my post above, here are a few things I really like. Things I think they actually do better than the original game:
Intro: They did a really good job cloning the original! I dislike the CS:S-esque backdrop in the menu, but the actual intro is a nice tribute to the original.
Health/Armor Bars: It amazes me how many other GE projects never bothered with something so iconic. The rest of the HUD isn't bad either, but I wish the radar was in the upper right corner, since that space is empty (bottom of the screen already has your armor indicator and message box).
Character Models: The characters are nearly perfect. They look like the actors they're supposed to be portraying. Trevelyan actually looks like Trevelyan, unlike a certain canned official remake.
Ragdoll Physics: Okay, okay, I'll admit I bashed these before. But I have to admit, turning on third person deaths and watching yourself fly across the room from an explosion and rolling down some stairs is just too entertaining. I hope they do consider remaking the classic death animations for certain types of kills, but they should keep these in too.
Jumping: Or rather, lack thereof. Yes, it's enabled, but it can be turned off server-side. Additionally, almost no one jumps (there's definitely not any bunny hopping going on, thankfully), and the jump is so low you can't actually clear railings or anything with it. I remember watching a video of people climbing all over normally unwalkable parts of the cradle by jumping over the railings, but that doesn't seem to be possible anymore, and I'm glad.
Temporary Invulnerability: Well, sort of. It's been recreated, and it works. One thing I don't like is that the way it works has been redone. This is supposedly to stop people from doing things like spamming the RC-P90, but it can be irritating when you empty a ZMG clip into someone's head and they just don't die. I guess if you let up your fire for a few seconds the shots register again, I'm not sure.
The Living Daylights: Having a single flag wouldn't work too well with this many players, so there are a number of them spread about. Like in GE, you get points for holding onto it, but with a visible progress indicator. Picking up weapons and armor actually serves a purpose with the flag - they give a pretty good increase to your progress. If someone shoots you, you get a second, gold bar on the screen. This starts counting down as long as you don't get shot again, and once it empties your armor is refilled. You can also hit people with the flag (nothing's better than getting a headshot kill with the flag) to defend yourself, but it's pretty weak.
Gun Game: This is a new game, and it's a lot of fun. Everyone starts of with a gold (err, "golden") PP7. You cannot pick up weapons in this mode. For each kill you make, your weapon levels down. It goes from a gold PP7 to a golden gun, all the way down to things like grenades. I really wish we could get this one in the original game! |

That last one sounds awesome!
I, too, was impressed with the classic health bar (unlike Perfect Dark, you can totally see where you stand).
I also didn't expect limited invulnerability; at least they're attempting that. |

Yea, i have to say a some of the new versions of the maps are a bit silly with some of the detail they added in. I too am not a fan of the "Oh, let's stick doors everywhere so it looks like a real location!" or "clutter adds a realistic feel! who cares that it's impossible to navigate!" stigmas the newer engine mappers have adopted. Though i don't notice it near as much anymore, when i first started playing it was highly excessive. |

I'm not even too thrilled with Facility Classic because of it. All of the tables and crates really get in the way. |

What's your name on Steam? I'll add you to my friends list. Maybe if enough people here play we can put together our own group on Steam, set up some true to the original games occasionally.
Jedi QuestMaster: I forgot, getting the Orange Box isn't just financially smart, you actually need one of its games to play GE:S. |
