Hmmm, it looks like the Complex may have been used in an attempt to make a multiplayer version of Citadel. I don't really remember that, but it looks to be so.

Laughing I passed right over those pictures, figured the lack of a sky was due to using an emulator with lousy plugins. But you're right- the pillars and basement are "missing" in those shots.

SubDrag, looks like you wrote the page. Any thoughts?

When it first came out, I used a "room modifier hack" to load one room at a time and took a million pictures.

Then Krijy found out that cradle had no portal issues and showed the whole level, so we all switched to that.

That's why there are two sets.

Very interesting stuff! There's a lot more history to this code than I ever knew.

Silence all! Zoinkity speaks!

I should mention something notable, something all have forgotten.
Citadel could be loaded before Krijy's code.

+_+

How it could be done!

This was specific to PAL, and under normal circumstances would not have netted anything but a large, green/orange sky and it's striking music. After all, you did not load into a room, as default position {0,0,0} lies between walls and all clipping range.

However, this could be defeated by simply altering your position. Rooms 1-4 did have enough valid tile to allow a simple position drop, from which you could slip off of tiles to explore rooms visible from the initial start location. With a single valid start location, you could view the initial room and any immediately connected rooms without issue.

Also, any stage number besides that of Cradle enables ordinary portal behaviour. Adding non-NULL portal data can be used to defeat this, but would require a degree of hex editting.

+_+

Why the timestamps must have been editted:

This photo was taken via emulator, using a non-Citadel sky, using Cradle's clipping file. The snapshots are suspiciously similiar to SubDrag's and Krijy's snapshots. Positions are suspiciously those located via Cradle's clipping; sky colour could only be achieved using Cradle, Dam, or Frigate; and the stage scale is quite obviously wrong.

Removing all objects is a simple matter. You may use debug's nonstandard view options, or simply use one of three known no-object codes. Normal portal behaviour can be reapplied by either providing valid portal data to a stage or using Citadel's original stage ID# along with data ID# redirection.

+_+

In short, although Citadel was accessible on PAL systems, it is unreasonable to believe that somebody would go to the effort of using a major background file redirect to obtain what is quite simple to attain by position modification.

It is also highly unreasonable that the method used, which has obvious broad applications, would not have been reused for several more years.

It is doubly unlikely that a hack predating Krijy's would be remarkably more intricate yet not net any notice from the community nor ever be refined.
The reaction itself is questionable, this especially from a bugger who spent a good deal of time determining if a segment of obscure wall from Facility may in fact be the fabled lost kingdom of Citadel. Det never blanket-disregarded anything, and would certainly not have disregarded this.

That's right I forgot about PAL loading that empty sky in GE! They were so close...

I had an image of the the Citadel starting up in two-player mode, with just Bond and Natalya floating in a green abyss, on my old (now lost) GeoCities website; The Multiplayer Saviours. It was from the PAL game, and was placed under the "Casino or Citadel" page. Funny to think, as Sub said, about how close they were.
