Why is everything as far as games and sharks go in hex format? Is there any way to convert hex to say C++ or something? It would make it much easier to work with. |

GS Codes simply change values.
a code like 811XXXXX 000A would simply mean that the variable stored at address 811XXXXX, let's call it X, gets the value 0x000A assigned, which would be X=0xA or X=10 in C++.
So the only way you can make things easier is making a table in this format:
Address - Meaning
finding out what data which address holds can only be done by experimenting and by relating (using tracing, via game events or even better via code once it has been disassembled, see below).
this is what our GE hackers have been doing for years (cheers!)

I don't know whether code hacks have been done in Goldeneye already.
code hacks mean assembly hacks, hacks inside the ROM, NOT the RAM, so no GS here, you would edit the ROM file via hex editor.
So code hacks would only be doable on the PC I guess.
Or in help of a Doctor V64.
code hacks do not include textures, because textures are "just" data.
for assembly hacks, you need to know N64 assembly and their opcodes.
a disassembler would be useful, becausing reading assembly in hex is a pain in the arse
assembly hacks can be really powerful.
in theory, using assembly hacks, you could e.g. make a Pong game play while you're controlling bond.
crappy example, but I think you get the point

Anyway, forget C++.
The game might be written in C++ or something similar when it was developped, but since there aren't any recompilers you can forget that.
Assembly is much easier anyway once you know it.
I did a lot of cool things using assembly to modify the exe file of C&C: Yuri's Revenge (http://rtb.strategy-x.com, even EA is impressed of it )

Okay, forget Gameshark.
I was just curious if it was possible to read the contents of the ROM. I thought all that stuff in the memory editor was coding. I have the ROM on the computer but unfortunately it has been made apparently you can't read all coding in 5 minutes. |
