Does anybody know if there are any texture packs being created for this game? I think people would kill to have them. The only one I have found the link is dead and it looks as though the guy quit working on it after Facility two years ago. Thanks, I would love to work with someone on this. _________________ Patrick |

no one is working on anything like that arround here that I'm aware.
to my knowledge, emutalk forums is the place where texture pack makers gather, so I recommend you check there if you haven't.
I myself don't have a pc powerful enough to use these packs, but I'm definitelly interested in that kind of stuff. I followed it from the start, but the lack of a suitable computer made me stop checking long ago. plus, while I like the concept, many of these packs, while they use very detailed textures, tend not to look very nice. The textures feel out of place, and are not very inspired.
anyway, if you start/continue a project and achieve something show-worthy, don't hestitate dropping a line and some screens for us to see |

Wasn't NapalNero making a GE beta texture conversion. _________________ Also known as Spyster or Nyxem

Well I found one on there but it seems to be dead. 'Farkas' only posted Dam and Facility and it seems that he just stopped in 2008. The textures really did look great, though. I agree with you that most texture packs do seem out of place and you must have some kind of vision to do a good job. Whoever this was one on the right track. Hm, well I'm not too familiar with hacking n64 games. It would be completely new to me but I'm certainly not opposed to learning. Do you know of a good place to start for learning how to hack and retexture by any chance? I'm sorry that your computer is slow:( I hope you can save up some money to upgrade sometime soon. _________________ Patrick |

he's talking about something else, spyster.
Napalnero is working on changing the rom's native textures to something that looks like the beta screenshots.
the texture packs we are talking about here are something else.
it all started when Rice, the programmer of the Rice video pluing for N64 emulators, added a functionality to his plugin to replace textures of games AT RENDER TIME with user provided ones.
This works because, as I explained other times, for now, N64 emulation is based arround HLE (High Level Emulation) of the RCP, the n64 co processor, that makes video and audio rendering, among other tasks.
The RCP is a microcode based processor, which means it changes the way it works by running on it different microcode each time.
The RCP is a complex, mysterious and undocumented piece of hardware, and it hasn't been emulated yet (Low Level Emulation). That is, it's exact inner workings haven't been fully determined yet (an effort is being made, but still incomplete). This means we can't run that microcode.
Emu programmers discovered that running that microcode wasn't "vital" for running games, though. They just had to determine what that microcode was meant to do.
It works like this:
The N64 CPU runs some software (let's call it the game engine), which produces some output data based on game data and user input.
Part of this data is video and audio data which is sent to the RCP for it to render it to pixels to be shown on your tv and pcm data for being played through your speakers (after being converted to analog signals by a DAC, obviously).
That data goes in the form of Display Lists and Audio Lists (yes, that's the actual nomencature by nintendo and sgi).
Display lists contain a number of commands that tell the RDP (the video part inside the RCP, where D stands for display) what to draw on screen.
It defines the positions of triangles, color shading, etc etc... AND IT REFERENCES TEXTURES STORED IN RAM.
And here's where the texture replacement magic comes into play.
Crrent emulators emulate how the microcode works, and so they know how to interpret display lists. Display lists contain references to textures.
The only thing that the video plugin has to do now is determining a way to:
-dump these textures to disk on your computer in a way that eaxh texture of the game is named uniquely
-read back these textures from disk when the emulated game tries to retrieve a texture from N64 ram.
The fun is that, once the texture is dumped to disk, you can close the emulator, grab some graphics editor and make a new texture that can be, I believe, up to 8x as big as the original!!

I tried to make the texture of the russian soldier more realistic (olive green) but it didn't work... he came out in odd colours (still bright green but I drew a red line accross him which rendered yellow???)
I also tried to change the bricks in facility to a hi-res brick but it came out pink and semi-Transparent!!!
Any Ideas?

Colored vertices on the model. Similarly, if you try just replacing Brosnan's black dinner jacket textures with the Connery's, he'll still have black along the sides of his model. I think they did that to ease the transitions between two textures that may not line up perfectly, although it may have been done just to add a little depth. |

I've been working on a goldeneye texture project for a while now. It is far from complete and mostly full of placeholder textures, however, if you want to try it out, get it here. Feedback is very welcome.

Edit: Wow, thanks for the kind comments! Yeah sorry about that annoyance, the images should link to the direct jpgs.
Edit 2014: Download link has been updated.

The simple way of determining where the video si from is rightlicking the lnk and clicking properties. Its from PornHub. _________________ Also known as Spyster or Nyxem
