 |
|
I'm pretty sure I'm the only one in here who still uses Windows 2000, so nobody probably cares, but I just thought I'd say how happy I am that I found some hacker known as blackwingcat who has been releasing all kinds of compatibility patches for software and drivers to make them successfully run on Windows 2000 (by using DLL wrappers). From i-tunes to Google Chrome to the newest Windows Media Player, etc, etc, they all now can run on Windows 2000. Unfortunately his blog is in Japanese.
Anyways I had just finished building a computer for somebody who I put Windows 2000 temporarily on it until he can get XP for it, and the one catch was that it had an ATI Radeon HD 4200 card requiring Catalyst 10 drivers. But just a few days ago, blackwingcat released Catalyst 10.6 drivers for Windows 2000 - I installed them and they work great (what great timing for me that they were just released a few days ago)
So yeah, I'm pretty happy about finding this I was afraid that my own Windows 2k was very nearly obsolete. Now it looks like I can run it for years go come. |

Not anymore, but I used win2k until just a couple of years, and before that I used win98 for very long. I'm not exactly an early adopter
anyway, I now use XP, and will probably use it a few years more, not sure about 7. |

From what I've been hearing, XP and 2000 use a very similiar code base. There's still a lot of users who prefer it, especially since there's less overhead.
I don't know if it's quite like the "drag-and-drop" ME over 98 upgradability, but you might just get lucky. Digression, but isn't it odd that ME's system files run so much better under win98?
I've had a chance to use win7, and it really does seem like it will stick for a while. Not a bad OS. _________________ (\_/) Beware

lol in June I posted about how I was going to steal that 4200 HD.
My new computer came with the 4200 HD On-Board, and I just bought a 4650.
Time flies by.
And yes. I'm using Windows 7 right now, and it's great, especially speed wise. _________________

Well the specs are:
Intel(R)
Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.00GHz 2.00 GHz,
256 MB of Ram
Yup they are low specs.
I can't even run Sim City 3000 with out some lag lol. _________________ There totally nothing to read here. |

the CPU is not that bad, you'll surely benefit a lot from a ram upgrade, EtAr |

I think everything might need new. Just a new PC period.
ESPECIALLY more RAM. Low end RAM [Which I usually buy] costs about 21 dollars for DDR2.
Most systems like yours use DDR I'm sure.
677 MHz 1GB DDR2 only cost about 22 dollars when I bought it.
But it probably still wont be worth it, you still need some new components. _________________

EtAr, look for the manual of your computer's main/motherboard to check what kind of memory it uses, or open the box and look arround to see if you can spot the maker and model number so we can find the info on the internet.
Swapping RAM modules on a PC isn't a hard operation and you'll probably get a decent ammount to see a significative speed boost for a reasonable price.
You could even go to some PC shop and ask for them to get the RAM and install it for you for little. Go to a small and friendly store, they usually don't charge for the handling in something like that, at least that's my experience with several places arround here. |
