I'm amazed that no one has tried remaking Goldeneye for the PC yet. I mean, GoldenEye: Source is a remake of it's multiplayer, but the singleplayer was a huge part of the game too. Two things I always felt the game lacked were coop and an easy way to play it. You either have to use the N64 control scheme (which hasn't aged well) or set up an emulator to use the Halo control scheme (I have yet to find a mode that makes the sniper rifle usable).

With the release of GoldenEye Wii inspiring me to get the original GoldenEye on the Wii, and the poor frame rate I've seen on the current Wii64 emulator when it comes to GoldenEye, I decided that if we based a project to remake GoldenEye on the Quake 1 engine, we would have an easier time porting it to other systems. It's light weight enough and open source, unlike the Source engine.

Then Dragonsbrethren suggested that we use the GoldenEye Setup Editor as a base. I've PMed SubDrag, zoinkity, and Wreck and asked them to release the source code. SubDrag said he doesn't plan to release the source code, and asked why I wanted it. Time to edit the first post again...

I remember there being a thread of a port of GE to Quake or Doom or something.

And there was another thread about porting it to Quake, but I dont think the idea was accepted.

This is something I've been giving a lot of thought to lately. I'm really not pleased with the state of N64 emulation, I never have been, and the game itself hasn't aged well in some aspects either, like the control scheme. The thing is, chances are a port to another game engine, unless massive changes were made, would just feel like running around GoldenEye levels in Quake, or Half-Life, or Unreal, or whatever.

Ideally, whoever undertook porting the game would try to use as many of the original resources in their native format as possible. The gameplay might have to be recreated from scratch, but the maps, models, textures, sounds, and music could all be used as-is. Maybe you could gut the Quake engine and do that, but you might be better off just writing something from scratch, or at least using something more modern.

One thing I'll say, the Setup Editor already has a lot of this down. I'd love to see its background and model rendering ported to cross-platform libraries, and become the basis for ports of the game itself to everything out there powerful enough to run it. Unfortunately, I just don't have any real programming experience to do it myself, and it's an awful big undertaking, so I wouldn't be surprised if no one else wants to do it.

It would be great to play the real GoldenEye online with a proper mouse and keyboard control scheme, and with the option of using higher resolution textures, higher poly models, and all of that.

Dragonsbrethren, you're right. Though the midi rendition of the songs in the setup editor hurts my ears, so I recommend that we use an MP3 version or a MOD version with the original samples. Also, I think we should move some of the more global stuff to an .ini file.

I'll ask SubDrag, zoinkity, and Wreck to release the source code. Who here would be willing to convert the GoldenEye Setup Editor into a prototype GoldenEye Setup Player?

Also, how's the speed of the visual editor for you guys?

Here's a quick todo list for release 0.01:

Create a "Bond" object at the start point.
Link viewpoint to that "Bond" object.
    Implement physics.
    Implement Mouse Look.
    Clean up interface.

Have we found the animations yet, and are unable to make heads or tails of them, or are we still searching for them?

EDIT:

I do remember someone making a blog about them re-creating GoldenEye for PC. I don't know anything about it, and quite frankly I don't think it got off of the ground.

SubDrag still hasn't gotten back to me. Anyone here willing to help with either a Setup Player or Quake GoldenEye (especially someone who know knows the Quake physics well enough to make them feel more like GoldenEye).

(Also, I played a GoldenEye Wii today. Not bad. Not GoldenEye, but not bad. I also like Shadow the Hedgehog for the Xbox, so make of that what you will.)

EDIT: (Played GE on Wii64 today. Runs fast enough to be fun to play, and altogether a great way to start 2011.)
