Okay, so I've registered my new domain under Awardspace, a great web hosting provider, and it says to wait 24 - 72 hours or such for the DNS to kick in, depending on your registrar.

(Rewinds)

"Isn't Awardspace my registrar?"

This confused me a lot. I'm still confused. Where do I get a registrar? To enter the name server? Obviously Awardspace doesn't have one.. I'm so confused .. Sad

Help?

DNS is a system that resolves (matches) domain names to IP addresses.
DNS for the public internet is a worldwide distributed system in which servers relay information from higher rank servers.
when you register a domain, specially a top level domain, the change will require some time to propagate to all servers in the world. During this time, your newly registered domain's resolvability will be dependent on whether the DNS server a given user is using has received the update yet or not.

I don't know how registration bureucracy works and how exactly do registrars work, but I can tell you the wait is normal, since there's a technical reason behind it.

Thanks Radorn. It's been about 5 days now, when it says "24 - 72 hours" which means I did something wrong. I saw on a picture, someone was pasting the name servers into some program that I can't use. I never did that. All I did was register the domain and pretty much sat there for the rest.

For the domain to propagate but I'm obviously doing something wrong, but I can't put my finger on it. Probably finding a program to put the nameservers in?

but... what do you expect to happen so you know the domain has propagated? I'm nost sure, but, are you perhaps expecting your registrar to email you telling you the domain name has propagated?

just try the domain name, if it works then it means it has propagated to the DNS server you are using (most probably that from your ISP)

if you tell me your domain name I can ping it from here, which will tell you if the domain has propagated to my ISP's DNS servers.

In answer to the first question, I can check it under awardspace control panel.

it's http://cabaloverclocked.com but I can't view it and I'm certain it's not propagated

No, **** it. I did this for a server that I thought people could play [a game], but on my website it doesn't even detect the MSSQL module which is needed for players to register login and view stuff. That doesn't even work. I have no domain, I have no advertising, I have no players [because of the advertising.], and now I have no website.

This is a sad moment

P.S. I'm getting 20 DNS failures and counting every day. My network setup drives me crazy.

Seems like a real problem. Which game, may I ask?

Also, if you can cancel it, do it and go for HostGator.

Sure, It's a game called 'Cabal Online'. I've been playing it for many years now.

I was thinking the same thing for HostGator, as you can paste the nameservers there... but.. I think I'm closing this down.

It's cool.

I just went with GoDaddy. They have areas to place the name servers.

Server is back up

I have 1 domain and like 5 sub domains

works out great

turns out Awardspace is just bad :S
