You may have heard about DNSChanger in the news lately. What does it do? It points your DNS resolvers to the wrong place. So if you were to type www.youtube.com for example you wouldn't be sent to this website. Could you access it directly via an IP? I'd imagine so, but unless you have EVERY IP address of EVERY website you want to visit, then you will eventually run into not being able to get to a site because the domain name won't work....and neither will attempting to resolve the IP from the domain name because you still will be pulling bad information.
TLDR; go here: http://www.dcwg.org/ to get more information, including clicking on the "Detect" link to receive a second link to a geographically-specific website that will tell you if you have been compromised or not. For the US peeps, our site is here: http://www.dns-ok.us/ If it turns green, you're good. If not, then follow the fix instructions on the first site I gave.

I had this happen to me back in 2008. I had something like this where it change my site. Every time I tried going to Google it keep bringing me to some porn site. It was quite awful I do say so my self. Only way I remove it was by reinstalling windows. It was quite a bad time for me. _________________ There totally nothing to read here. |

Well, I guess it's only awful if it was a bad porn site. Especially one that doesn't give you anything for free. The horror... the horror. _________________

It was only on my ISP's end. Their DNS server took a dump I guess

You know what I find quite irritating, especially if I'm at the library under dialup, are video ads. Do you have any idea how much data that streams in? Plus, if they coded it so it doesn't load progressively and waits to finish... It's bad enough with scripts and images, but geesh.
Clean, but did get one of those a few years back. It was a bit trivial to remove since it was win98.
Should mention the US automatic DNS detection site is inoperable as of July 9th 2012. Funny they can pass through some nonsense like SOPA but fall flat with an actual, viable, realistic, and persistant threat like DNS redirection. Oh, but Iran won't have access to open-source compression algorithms from our servers, whoop-dee-freaking-do...
Anyway... _________________ (\_/) Beware
