The hunting knife was removed from the Japanese version of GoldenEye. It was cheat-only so it doesn't really affect the game, and isn't a big deal in the All Guns cheat, but I was curious how they handled 2x Hunting Knife, since I've never seen it mentioned anywhere. I figured they just removed it, but it turns out they replaced it with a new cheat: Rifle/Launcher

It gives you a paired rocket launcher and sniper rifle. The sniper rifle is set as the right weapon, so you can use its scope to aim long distance rockets. The weapons can be used separately, too. It's funny, I actually used to do the same thing with the reload trick to get odd weapon pairings.

Anyone else know about this? (I'm guessing Zoinkity did because he's Zoinkity Razz) I certainly didn't until tonight, never bothered looking into it even though I read the Japanese version removed knives a while back.

HAHA! I AM ZOINKITY!

Never understood why it was unlinked and why they were specificly skipping it, but you can certainly force-feed him a knife no problem. They kept throwing knives, and anyone who's heard of Elfen Lied can tell you it wasn't due to squeemishness.

For instance, switches pp7 with hunting knife in Bunker I:
801D45D7 0002

It was very cool they made a combo set as a cheat, especially with the sight and all. In general the doubles cheats were 'meh', but a linked up one is pretty cool. I'm surprised more people don't do it in their stages. You can combo anything!

Is it still possible to make switched-up sets in PD?

I guess no one knew about it cause most of us don't speak japanese. As far as I know you can't do mixed in PD.

Probably a certain rating they were shooting for, they did the same thing with the combat knife in PD. (PD's blood has been toned down to GE levels and dead bodies disappear, too.)

Japanese GE leaves more armor in on 00 Agent too and I think the auto aim is stronger on that difficulty too, closer to Agent, but it's been a long time since I played with auto aim on.

Wow, very nice. I spent a fair amount of time comparing the Japanese version with the US version and totally missed this.

Wow never knew there was a cheat like that. That a pretty nice find there dragon.

Makes me wonder why they replace the knifes with the rockets and sniper though. It just does not make sense. I might just have to play the Japanese version of this just to find out more things they change from the American to Japanese release. Because now you got me wondering if there more things change within it besides armor placements and cheat changes. Wonder if anyone here got a list of changes from Japanese and American release?

It got a fair number of the PAL bugfixes. Clocks use floats, not ints; explosions (remotes especially) are staggered; some of the tables have defaults (except the text block notably); MP "1 minute left" string is in the text file, not hardcoded; mostly little things.

I wrote a comparison section on TCRF's GoldenEye article:

http://tcrf.net/GoldenEye_007_(Nintendo_64)#Regional_Differences

But it's not impossible that I missed some things. I doubt there's anything as big as Rifle/Launcher left hiding, though. Zoinkity, feel free to fact check that and make sure I didn't describe the explosion changes incorrectly. (I haven't done much with the rest of the article, it definitely needs some work, I'll get around to it one of these days when I'm done with PD.) I didn't write anything about the changes to the internals either, partially because it has little impact on the actual game (other than the PAL version running a bit smoother) and partially because I didn't trust myself to get it right.

Also, a likely explanation for the odd pairing, other than the fact that sniper rockets are awesome, is that you get this cheat in Jungle. Xenia uses the paired RC-P90 and grenade launcher. (Strange that they didn't choose to go with that combo, but again, sniper rockets.)

Very cool find with that cheat option. I also used to do the same thing, usually in Surface i, by using a 2x Rockets cheat and switching while reloading. Pretty awesome to see they thought it was cool enough to actually make it a cheat itself.

One other thing I remember, it may have been KCGhost who spotted it, was something about the amount of time you have to work at the end of Train. Normally you need to hit Xenia in order to buy enough time for Natalya to locate Boris and get outside. But it might be different in the Japanese version. Someone would need to check it out to know for sure.

I just played Train in the North American and Japanese versions, making sure to only shoot Ourumov. In NA, I had about three seconds left on the clock when Natalya cracked the password. In JP, I had four. (Natalya proceeded to make great use of this extra second by running back into the exploding train after escaping.)

I wouldn't call it a definitive change without testing it a few more times - it might just be variability in the actions used for this segment.

Edit: As a side note, Natalya did escape successfully in the NA version. I always thought it was impossible for her to get out in time on 00 Agent without shooting Xenia, but evidently I was wrong. Not that I trust Natalya to pull that off again after her brilliant performance in the Japanese version.

You'd have to compare the action blocks from NA and JAP together to see what the difference is. I've still stayed away from that stuff, so I won't be too much help in that department. But I do recall them being somewhat different from one another.

If you grab me a copy of the Japanese Train setup (or walk me through getting it out of the ROM myself), I'll gladly take a look. I wouldn't be surprised if there aren't any changes and the difference in time comes down to the variability of the cycle counter, though.
