DB is right - in fact, I would say that the MAJORITY of games on the NES sucked. Out of a library of nearly 1000 games, I'd say only 200 to 300 of them were actually decent or better. And another 200 to 300 were absolutely awful.
That said, I think in another 20-30 years, the NES classics will STILL be classics and by then, highly collectible. What games from the current generation by then will be either of those things? I'd guess not many. |

I remember seeing a picture someone had made which showed FPS games from the 90's to early 00's on the left, and from before the mid 00's until now on the right. The left side looked so much more colourful and creative and unique. While the right side seemed to be maybe three different games total spread out over fifteen or more screenshots. They've just become so generic, without an identity of their own. It's like the companies think, "well, this style worked well for that company, so let's just copy it to appeal to the current market audience". It's a sad, interchangeable genre these days.
I'd have to say that there were a ton of crummy games made on systems like the NES and SNES. But there are some that stand out above the rest and are still very fun to play to this day. I'm not sure if the current generation will act in the same fashion. Childhood nostalgia definitely plays a big part in that. So for some of us, we'll want to bring out SMB3 or Castlevania every so often. But for others, who might be much younger than us, they'd have a strong attachment to Gears of War or Resident Evil 4. It's as much a personal thing as it is a generational one. _________________

One thing to keep in mind is that the market drove the push to more "realistic" games. It's funny, had you showed me a COD game when I was a kid I would've loved it, I loved GE for its realistic attributes and kind of blew off "arcade" FPS games after getting it. Took me a long time to go back and appreciate the latter games for what they were. I do think it's an oversaturated market today, but the demand for those modern military games was definitely there back in the 90s.
One thing I'm definitely sick of is the overuse of desaturated colors. I have no problem with realistic graphics; I just want to see realistic color in realistic games. We've gone from overly bright color to HD brown, neither of which is what I want. I sometimes question whether the artists who implement color correction filters that make a clear sky look almost brown (or green!) have ever actually seen the outside world... |

Yep. It irritates me that (a) the (graphically fantastic) game engines nowadays are so often used to portray bland, colourless, ugly worlds. For some reason, most modern games (at least the ones with good graphical engines) are set in unwelcoming distopias (Batman: Arkham City, Fallout 3, New Vegas, the Gears of War games, etc), with the result that the games look ugly and unpleasant. Alright, so this is sometimes called for by the games' storylined, but when you look at a beautiful game like Far Cry 3, or Skyrim, it does make you wish that all games were set in beautiful worlds, and
(b) I hate how most first person shooters (my favourite genre) nowadays are generic Call of Halo games with little innovation, little reason to replay the games (when you've been through them once you've seen everything, and you often don't even enjoy huge chunks of the games, unlike Goldeneye/Perfect Dark, which are fun and have different objectives and enviromental factors per skill level), and don't allow you to do anything other than go from A to B, through a number of cuscenes. And they all contain at least some of the following flaws;
- no friendly fire (so you or your team mates can happily shoot or grenade anywhere, without worrying about hurting each other, which lets you go mad instead of using skill),
- unskippable cutscenes,
- a weapon carrying limit,
- rechargeable health/shield that allows you to fight someone, retreat when you are wounded, hide for a few seconds until you're back to 100%, then go back and fight them again, until you are wounded, etc, all the while allowing you to use the infinite hide and heal mechanic as a skill-less
method of defeating an enemy,
- scenery which a four year old child could climb over, yet you (a soldier or cyborg or superman or whatever) can't get past, even though it's often only knee high, or has a five foot gap in it,
- NPCs who just stand around saying idiotic random things, and when they do speak to you (at scripted points) and supposedly look at you whilst talking, they instead stair at a point eight inches to your left - how hard can it be to program the NP to look at you when talking to you?,
- dialogue that's either unconvincingly over-macho, or tries to be funny but isn't (though to be fair, Perfect Dark does the latter with Elvis' dialogue),
- a pointless, uninteresting story that you can't (or don't want to) keep track of,
and more problems that I can't be bothered thinking of at the moment. Basically, for me, the first person shooters is going through a bad time , lasting near enough a decade. There have been some very good FPSs in that time, such as Halo 2, Halo 3, Halo Reach, and Halo 4, No-One Lives Forever 2, Half-Life 2, Bioshock 1 and 2, Timesplitters Future Perfect, etc, but for me it's been downhill the past ten years or so.
BTW, I'd like to see that picture (or article) about old and modern first person shooters, if you can find it. |

To be honest like Dragon said, Every generation has a bad and good games. And this year, I've found this generations being flooded with amazing games that Nintendo keeps rolling out. I really starting to like where the WiiU is heading.
Now back on topic. This generation best game? Eh... I say this year needs more games. The generations just was started. So really there nothing really much to name off.
So I'll go with New Super Mario Bros U/Super Luigi U Since well I'm clearly enjoying the game so much. The game is colorful. And the levels are so well made. I love the dlc as well. Was well worth my money. _________________ There totally nothing to read here. |

I might have to go for Devil May Cry as this generations best game, the story is a lot of fun, the gameplay is as deep as you want to make it, the graphics are delightfully artistic (it actually feels at times like you're playing an art experience than a game) the soundtrack is desirably weird, the bugs are laughable and actually enjoyable, it's a brilliantly well rounded and polished addition to a niche market.
My number 2 would have to be "Sleeping Dogs" - for the GTA feel and approach with complete disregard to the logistics of the likes of...well...gravity. And again, nice art direction, balanced graphics, good clarity of the world frequently dark, disgusting, kungpowish and humorous story line.
My mod pick is "F*cking Run" for F3ear - which just like the gay guy at the party, always seems to come out while we're drinking. _________________ No Mr. Bond, I expect you to be re-coded! |

Elder scrolls Skyrim, and Oblivion. I'm by no means a huge fanboy of this series, I'm more of a Nintendo guy, but if you can play a game like this for like a month straight from the time you wake up to the time you go to bed then it must be something really good.
Seriously, those game never got boring.
Portal was pretty addictive. Haven't played any of the Mass Effects, but I want too. _________________ http://heavyd139.wix.com/project-rebirth |
