Did anybody here ever own or play any lesser known or obscure video game consoles? I'm talking things like Virtual Boy, 3DO, Sega CD, Turbo Grafx 16, etc.

I owned a Sega CD and 32x adapter that I bought from a co-worker for dirt cheap like 15 years ago along with some games. For the most part, the games were sub-par, though I did enjoy a few of the racing games like Virtua Racing for the 32x and Jaguar XJ220 for the Sega CD. I also remember having Sol-Feace, a shoot-em up game. I think I ended up selling it all on ebay many years ago.

One thing I have a memory of as a kid was at some department store there was a 3DO demo machine set up with Jurassic Park. The image that sticks in my mind was the dinosaur chasing the car, you could see it in the "Objects are Closer than they appear" mirror. I was only 12 or 13 years old at the time, I don't know why that image so vividly sticks with me.

Dewd I loved the 32x genesis. Some neat 3d games for that. I have an emu with all those games. Virtua racing is a fun crazy game. Even with the outdated graphics some great gameplay in that game.

Multi hit me up so we rock some KEGA Fusion (built-in p2p, fullscreen chat), the sync is perfect and so is Virtua Racing Deluxe 0.o BEAST LOL LOVE the psychedelic steering arms awesome new rides

Hilarious thing is I was unaware of the Genesis addons until like '09 .. and I'm pure SEGA lol. Amazing how beefy and complex it gets with everything added the three power supplies and cable clusters are wicked

Panasonic 3DO (3D Online ?) always interested me.. its feebay price seems much much better than its launch price for sures.. would love seeing Need For Speed 1 in its true form and especially Road Rash with all the FMVs and tunes.. PS1 downport is pathetic

I remember using the Sega CD back in the day, most of the games we're god awful. But at least it did have Sonic CD though. Till this day its consider the best in the series.

I had Watara Supervision with the tilt screen. I think that qualifies as "obscure"? I think its the most obscure I have had.

Would you call ColecoVision obscure it is still one of the best consoles ever.
But maybe too mainstream? Same goes for Sega GameGear, maybe not obscure enough.

I also had Atari Jaguar with the Jaguar CD. We had quite many Jaguars here, but the Jarguar CD was quite rare around here.

I've been mostly mainstream I guess, but my old neighbor had Bally Astrocade. First time I saw it, I was thinking it was a beta tape recorder or something.

Not to be contrary, but I'd imagine that some people wouldn't class many of the consoles mentioned in this thread as obscure, they'd instead say that obscure consoles were the Amstrad GX4000 (only about 15,000 sold, according to the British magazine Retro Gamer), digiBlast, the Fairchild 2 (I think it was called the Fairchild 2, the first console with cartridge support).

Anyway, personally I've always been lucky/cowardly with the consoles I've bought, as I've never bought a console until it had games on it than I wanted, so I've never ended up with a console that had no games I liked.

So far I own the following six consoles;

N64 (still my favourite console, largely because of Goldeneye and Perfect),

Original XBox (my second favourite console, not just because of it's great games, especially first person shooters, but also because when it's modded it becomes a first class emulation machine (it has perfect emulators for 8 and 16 bit consoles and computers - the N64 and Playstation emulators are much more hit and miss though) and also a very, very good media playing, playing every format of movie and sound you can name (including .avi/.mpg/.mov/.rm/.wmv/.flv/etc), the only problem is that the XBox isn't fast enough to play Hi-Definiton video files, and doesn't have a Blu-ray drive, but of course it's a great DVD player.

PS2, (a fantastic library of games)

Gamecube (my least favourite of the six, as it has few games that I like (and any cross-platform games that I like, I bought for the XBox, as I prefer it's controller) but it has some real classics, such as Metroid Prime 1 and 2, Super Smash Bros. Melee, F-Zero GX, etc),

XBox 360 (brilliant machine, with lots of great games)

PS3 (brilliant machine, though I tend to buy the XBox 360 version of cross-platform games, as I prefer the 360's controller. Still has some great exclusives though, such as inFamous 1 and 2, LittleBigPlanet 1 and 2, and the Uncharted games).

Obscure is also a matter of location. The PC Engine wasn't obscure at all in Japan, but you'd have a tough time finding anyone State-side that's seen a TurboGrafix 16 in a store, much less the disk drive add-on. Some horribly common things never even saw release here, such as the FDS or Spectrum. That said, try to find somebody outside America who's ever heard of the Tandy or Radio Shack TI- series.

Things can become relatively rare due to circumstances adding to obscurity over time. The Virtual Boy didn't sell well, for instance, so if you didn't live through the time when it was available you might only know about it's reputation. It saw heavy marketing and many stores had demo units, so despite its short lifetime and small library people who watched it come and go would be hesitant to call it obscure. Try to find a used unit nowadays though--especially a complete one.

That said, my uncle had one of them and two laserdisk game setups. One was Space Ace but uncertain the other. I had one of the SMS economy releases with Alex Kid in Miracle World built in. Unfortunately it was destroyed due to flooding. Sold a Vectrex that was in need of repair due to the same flood.

Those Jaguar CD units were pretty tough to come by. Sort of like Atari Lynx multiplayer cables.

If you can walk into a random game shop and people give you weird looks when you say "Saturn", I'd say yes. It's certainly among the lesser known of its generation, and that's a shame considering some of its exclusive titles.

That thing had so many different special editions in Japan. Some of the last games were its best by far.

I actually went to a game store near me and bought all of their Sega Saturn games. They haven't gotten any new ones since then. A really big shame too since I've had to buy almost all my Saturn games online and there are classics that I don't own yet like NiGHTS and Fighters Megamix. I'd love to find a game store that has those games, but sadly that day may never come.
