Considered by many to be one of the best NES hacks of all-time (having played and beat the game myself, I concur), Mario Adventure (an SMB3 hack) was released quite some time ago.
Well, the maker of that hack (DahrkDaiz) is working on a new hack called Mario Adventure 3 and he claims it will be ready for release in several months.

Been following the progress on it. It's an absolutely amazing piece of work.
I believe he planned to release an editor or toolkit along with the final release as well.
